We literally have the most hyper black lab ever. He is pushing 8 years old and he is still completely too hyper to allow him inside. He is a great dog that wouldn't intentionally hurt a flea. I don't see how either lab or rottwieler can be inside dogs. They will both tear up house so I think you have a few years before you can bring them in. Rotts are huge. I really think German Shepherds are the best big dog. They are very intelligent and beautiful, and not as hyper. They shed hair though.

I've got a lab/German Sheppard mix (male) and a Lab/Border Collie mix (female). They are both wonderful dogs. The male is HUGE. He comes up to the bottom of my rib cage. The female is smaller, slightly. She only comes up to my stomach. They are wonderful dogs, but horrible guardians lol. The most they'd do is lick an intruder to death. Entirely too friendly, if you ask me. Still, I wouldn't trade them for anything. They are incredibly energetic, and require a lot of exercise, but it's well worth it. They are very loving, loyal, good-natured dogs.

Definately not a Rottweiler for what you are looking for.

Rottweilers are high energy dogs, very possessive and strong willed.

I own one, and he is the best dog I've ever owned, but you have to excercise them vigorously.

Labs are also high energy dogs who like to run outside.

For a big inside dog, look toward a Great Dane, they are actually very well suited to being indoors (even in small apts.)

Good luck with whatever you decide.

We are considering getting a large dog, my wife wants a lab and I want a rotweiler. We want a laid back, easy going dog that will get along with our two little dogs (pekinese, shi tzu). Our new dog will be mainly a house dog, with a few hours a day in the yard. Our activity level is not high: walks around the neighborhood, park. I would appreciate any input/suggestions from lab/rotweiler owners.
Labs are great dogs, especially with kids and other animals. They are very smart and easy to train, atleast mine was, but they are hyper. Not at the level of a boxer, but my dog had the energy of a puppy up until the day she died. My dog never even liked being inside, so I don't know if it would be the best dog for what you are looking for.

I would not suggest a Rottweiler for your first dog. I LOVE Rotties, I think they are a wonderful breed, but they tend to be dominate, headstrong and an undertrained Rottie will plow through your life like a bull.

Golden retrievers (not labs) tend towards being more docile (notice I say 'tend towards' because each dog has it's own personality regardless of breed).

Please take it upon yourself to get you and the dog some formal obedience training, too. Any dog can cause problems when they are misbehaving, but big dogs have more of an impact on property and body when they do.

PLEASE consider rescuing a dog from the pound or local shelter! I am a big advocate of rescue dogs, having rescued a few in my time, and they've been wonderful companions!

It doesn't sound like a lab or rottie would suit your lifestyle. Labs are extremely energetic and rotties were created for guardianship, so as a breed they may tend toward willfulness and assertiveness, and possibly aggression. You've got two opposite breeds represented. Do you want a pet or a weapon?

I agree with going to the shelter and looking for a mix that suits your personality and lifestyle. I have three mixed breeds and I can't say enough good about them - they are all unique, smart, very healthy, very stable, and gorgeous to boot!

You can also contact specific breed rescues and they can help you look for something that suits you!
Best wishes...
