So I haven't seen many knitters around here, but maybe you're just all in hiding waiting for a thread to pop up that will let you unravel a bit! ;)

What are you knitting right now?

Me? I just finished the Coronet hat from knitty.com and am about to move on to the shimmer shrug (same website). Gotta love those free downloadable patterns!

I am going to be knitting, soon, a shawl out of a yarn that's really soft a squishy, reminds me of one of the 'baby teri' yarns, for my mom for Christmas.

Mesa, you're so right, the free downloads are fantastic. Knitty has a lot of really nice patterns. I also crochet so it seems I get double on the free downloads/free patterns. And since I crochet faster than I can knit at this point, this time of year I do more crochet.

Ladyday, I like "playing" with all kinds of yarns. Recently I made something using a South West Trading Co. ribbon yarn, 100% soy silk, it was just decidant. I use a lot of Lion Brand, but just what ever tickles my fancy. Yarns are so much fun.

So nice to hear from all of you. I've never tried machine knitting before and I've never learned to crochet, but I think at some point I'd be interested in both. The shrug I'm working on is made with Lion Brand Glitterspun. I've never worked with anything quite like it. It's sort of like ribbon but not quite. And the shimmer is pretty too. I'm making the shrug in black and it glitters nicely without being overpowering. Mostly I've worked in worsted or bulky weight cotton blends and acrylics.

Ya'll have found some pretty fun sounding yarns (soy silk, yak). Around here there is a group of ladies who spin their own sheep and llama yarn, but I've never gone to watch.

I really encourage you to go and watch and even try if you get a chance. There is nothing quite like your own hand spun yarn. If you don't have a lot of money you can buy a drop spindle or even make your own, so that you can spin your own yarn.

I am knitting a scarf for my daughter

Cool. Scarves are fun and they're so in style. I grew up in the deep south and so never really had the need to own them. Now I live further north and a whole new world of winter knitting fun has been opened to me! What yarn are you using for the scarf and what will it look like?

I love knitting!

I can't follow patterns, so over the years I've developed a lot of my own designs. I especially love making baby sweater/hat/bootie sets - we're in the military, and there's always someone we know who's having a baby. Baby sweaters are so quick and easy to make, it's like instant gratification. It's a good way to try out new ideas and designs without investing too much time or yarn.

I like crocheting too. I get super thick yarn and making big bags with handles. They're very handy for storing and carrying my knitting. I like knitting in the car on long trips.

i'm not much of a knitter but my mom and aunt are :)
they crochet aswell. hey um mesaboogiegrl, i like your avatar thinga ma bobby of The Tick. i think that's such a funny show ^_^

Thanks! My SIL turned me on to the Tick several years ago, and even though the cartoon's long gone I still love it.

BTW, folks, I've finished my shimmer shrug from knitty and it looks great! I had to frog the back once, but I got the hang of the lace pattern on the second time around, and I'm VERY pleased with the results. I'll try to post some pics soon if anyone's interested.

Next on my knitting agenda? Broad Street Mittens (also from knitty). This'll be my first glove or mitten project, but the pics are so great that I've gotta try it. Going for yarn tomorrow since my LYS's are all closed on Mondays. :sigh: However I'm still excited about the new project.

Hello all!

I'm a newbie knitter - just started this week. I really like it. So far all I know how to do is a couple of stitches, but they look pretty good!

Anybody know a good place to get some fashionable scarf patterns that a beginner could do?

Blessed Advent!

With love in Christ,
Grace

When I'm looking for a free pattern online, I usually google it and see what I get. My parameters are usually "free knit pattern scarf" if I'm looking for a scarf pattern. www.knitty.com always has fun free patterns. Click on "archive" to see their complete listing. Another great one is www.knittingpatterncentral.com. There is a search field on the left hand side of the home page. Type in scarf or whatever you're looking for and you should find a slew of patterns to browse. I turned up 473 free patterns when I typed in scarf to their search field.

Hope that helps. Best wishes learning to knit. If you have any questions feel free to post or pm me!

I've been knitting since I was eight. Since the woman who taught me moved away, the only things I knew how to do were basic knitting and the stockinette stich. I finally started realizing that there are patterns and things out there! I haven't made anything big yet- so far just a scarf, a sunglasses case, coin purse, etc..., but I'm really excited!

How do you keep patience making things with over 80 stitches on them?! I lose patience soooo quickly on big projects.
