I was actually excited to see the show. I thought it was very interesting. My son and I were watching it and when it came to the challenge rewards, my son kept saying he'd pick the tv, I was very impressed the kids were practical and chose the pottys. I think it will be interesting to watch the transformation in these kids and see how develop.

I agree, and I also thought they would pick the TVs.

The kids are kids, Greg's behavior showed that. But he was also the one who helped (DJ? don't remember his name) the kid with the muscle cramp, and he was the one encouraging Jimmy to stay. I was so impressed with the level of responsibility and maturity most of these kids were willing to accept right off the bat.

Jimmy just broke my heart. When he was sitting alone, crying, saying "I'm only 8 years old. I'm only in the third grade. I'm way too young for this." I was sad to see him leave, but I can understand why he did.

Absolutely loved it!

Definitely one of the best reality shows I've ever seen. Right up there with Amazing Race if you ask me.

Jimmy had me in tears. Sophie is a model of leadership and self-reliance, and girls everywhere could learn a lesson from her. And DK had me in stitches: "Nothing like this has ever happened in Chicago!" :D

Wasn't it Sophie who was performing to earn money for the bike? and who also got the gold star? You could just see leadership qualities all over this girl! Read the girls bio -http://www.cbs.com/primetime/kid_nation/bios/sophia/ Her parents must be so proud!

Sophia really REALLY impressed me.

When she ended up as a Laborer and saw the $3 bike that she wanted, I thought she'd say something like "At 10 cents/day, I'll never have enough to get that bike".

Then when she started doing those corny dances for money and raised enough funds, I was like, "Wow... her dancing SUCKS but she's got one hell of an entrepreneurial spirit!"

She really deserved that gold star. She immediately took on a (forgive me) maternal role among the kids and offered a lot of support and guidance.

So, I was noticing something during the show yesterday and decided to do some research. Check this out.

State Representation

Florida - 4
Georgia - 7
Illinois - 4
Indiana - 3
Kentucky - 2
Massachusetts - 2
Minnesota - 2
Nevada - 5
New Hampshire - 1
New Jersey - 1
North Carolina - 1
Ohio - 1
Pennsylvania - 2
Texas - 2
Washington - 3

There are NO kids from New York or California. What are the odds that the two most populous States would have no representation in the mock town?

Hey Red, nice to see ya....

Yep I really was impressed by her too, glad she got the gold star as well.

I was left wondering...how can any of the 4 on the council ever win it, since they are the ones who vote....or do the jobs change....

Still haven't seen the whole show yet, so maybe that will explain it.

Hey!

I'm not even sure what the ultimate objective of the show is supposed to be. I know they're supposed to build the town and make it work, but in terms of there being an ultimate winner... not sure if there is one.

The council leaders can be impeached from what I understand. I think it'll depend on people within the group deciding to challenge one of them for their position and acquire the votes of their peers.

I find that the show is kinda like Survivor meets Lord of the Flies.

Yeah, but being the eternal optimist...I was thinking the council would never have a chance, and I felt bad for them.

Yeah, I thought that too...Survivor meets Lord of the Flies.....lol...we'll see, but I'm liking it so far.

Sophia has an interesting voice.

This is my new favorite reality show. I am so impressed with some of these kids!! Did anyone watch tonight??

Now that Big Brother is over, I'm glad that we have BB Jr. to watch ^_^ It really was a fascinating microcosm of our society. The kids have their own attitudes and beliefs. Leaders are emerging and I think we'll see even more of it next week.

I was wondering about the adult guidance - they get to see the host every few days, and obviously there are cameramen all around time but I assume they can't talk to the kids. What if someone was injured? Would they take them away for treatment? What if they somehow went through all of their food supplies?

I did read that a couple of the kids were injured - one, I think, drank bleach.

Anyway, they did step in and got them medical attention. I do wonder how much other adult interaction they get while they are there. One of the kids, Jimmy maybe, said something like "I thought there would be more adults here" so it didn't sound like they really get a lot of assistance.

Kid Nation is definitely going to be on my weekly "to-watch-on-TV list" this season. I was impressed with the first episode and am looking forward for the next one.

I think Sophia would be a far better council member than Mike. Mike, despite his boy scout status, seems to be more of an authoritarian than a real leader. Yes, scouting develops some excellent leadership skills, but one must possess the wisdom to use those skills, as they are worthless when they are dorment.

I felt really bad however for that poor little 8 year-old boy who decided to leave. Some kids at that age are truly "needy" and just require parental presence for comfort. I think he made the right choice in voluntarily leaving, since he could have potentially become an impediment due to his sensitivities. Hopefully he'll have a chance to try again when he is a little stronger emotionally in a later season.
