How about creative things that people can do for Christmas with little or no money?

We'll buy toys for the grandkids, but we might have to be creative in gifts for others in the family.

Great topic magnum :)

We tend to make lists in our family. We buy what people would like to have rather than guessing. This can take a lot of stress out of Christmas shopping and can actually work out quite economically if people know there is a price limit.

Another thing that was quite successful and I did for many years was to make the Christmas cake for each extended family. Someone else bought the Quality Street and someone else bought a festive tin of biscuits (cookies).

Every year I make the Christmas pudding for various family members and Rob makes the Brandy Butter.

In an attempt to get away from some of the commercialism of Christmas I no longer buy the Christmas wrappying paper. I buy plain paper, gold, silver or something like a tartan. I only send Nativity Christmas cards and have cut down on how many I now send. Gift tags can be made from coloured card or from last year's cards.

I make a very detailed list of all the food etc I am likely to need over the Christmas period and keep it in my bag and cross off things as I buy them. I keep a large cardboard box for Christmas goodies and no-one dares to touch it - the box makes sure everything is kept seperate from the other grocery stuff. I buy small gifts and bargain gifts throughout the year for the grandchildren and this helps take the pressure off too. :)

Glad you didn't close it. I am in the US and am not sure how we will celebrate. There is a big fireworks celebration down the road from us tonight but not sure hubby is up to going. We are trying to get our place here ship shape and it is tiring. we will likely just go out for dinner. Happy Holiday everyone though.

I use cloth gift bags. My mil got me started on that and they are a great idea and easy to make. They are reuseable or the person can take them and use them for giving as well. I am not a real baker but always make a huge batch of homemade fudge to give away. It is a favourite and my only cooking tradition. I usually try to give practical gifts to my family they don't seem to mind but my hubby likes books so can't make those. lol

Thanks for some great ideas for Christmas. Getting some super bargains from time to time during the year is a great idea. I also like the idea of baking goodies, even though my wife would have to do all of that. Maybe I'll see some ideas that will get me busy also.

Here's an idea for someone with a computer: make a wall calendar with various family pictures for each month. There is a variety of freeware software available that would do a beautiful job on this (i.e. Open Office). Open Office has a variety of calendar templates - free for the download. I consider something like this to be personal and a wonderful gift to get or receive.

Have fun Jan

We have stopped exchanging gifts with siblings, and now just give to our grandkids.
Everyone has what they want/need...it was getting redundant to exchange $$ or gift cards
They stopped being receptive to homemade gifts years ago :(

Now we focus on the meaning of the day, the joy of having loved ones still with us to celebrate, and remember those who have passed

We made a wall calendar last year. It turned out really nice.

My daughter did that last year, and I'll have to say it was one of the best gifts. There was a family portrait on the cover and pictures of the grandkids on the month pages. It won't ever be thrown away. In fact, I'll probably try to scan the pictures and get them on my computer.
