  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Go to a local outfitter (a real one, not some place like Dick's) and ask questions. Find a book, but also find a kayaking club. I was out in Fayetteville, West Virginia (the New and Gauley Rivers are there) and asked about how to get into kayaking. The guy (who did whitewater kayaking) said the best way to learn was to join a club.

I second what boilerblues said!

You don't list your location, so I can't reccomend an outfitter near you. However, for my money the best whitewater outfitter in the eastern U.S. is the Nantahala Outdoor Center in North Carolina. They offer daylong kayaking intorudctory courses, and probably some advanced stuff as well.

I'm interested in taking up kayaking. Does anyone know anything about equipment, etc. to get me started?

Ok.

First, get yourself a kayak.
Second, you need a paddle. But not just any paddle. You need one with paddles on both ends.
Third, you need a Life Jacket.

That is basically all I got and I was out there when I got my kayak!

Of course, this is me just bugging ya a bit. Obviously you need those things!

You have to consider if you are on an ocean or a lake or river. If you are on a lake or river, you have to consider the length considering what style you wish to go with.

If you desire to go in rough water, You can have a short kayak that you can play with but is less stable, or a long kayak that is more stable but not as manuverable.

There are a lot of options, you just have to choose which route you are going to go!

If there is anything that I can help you out with, I will try!

I go out on a 60 mile long lake. It gets 6 foot waves on it, and my kayak is about 12 feet long. So it is manuverable and fun in those big waves. Of course, you have to be careful and you have to learn to read the waves, or else you will be in the lake. And that isn't too much fun.

So just be careful and be wise with everything you are doing - buying a kayak and more importantly going on the water. Don't want anything to happen to ya!
