Why Kamala Harris' New Politics of Joy Is the Best Way to Fight Fascism
History shows that joy and mockery are key to taking down existing or would-be authoritarian regimes.
This is certainly a novel approach to campaigning, at least in
America.
The too common approach of "Disagree with me, and I'll stomp you into the dust"
approach by too many politicians, (and some church congregations), is NOT
persuasive. And, that violence-just-under-the-surface approach, attracts
people who have a pension for lawless violence. The January 6th lynch mob
that Donald Trump incited, is an example of this.
One of the reasons why we DIDN'T need another Biden-versus-Trump
presidential contest, is that Biden is very narrow in the way he lectures
about his political position. This may work with his longtime fans, but,
as I have mentioned before, to win the presidency, currently, the candidate
had better appeal to the MODERATE MIDDLE of America, and not to the
party fringe groups.
We need a president who is a public servant, and very clearly KNOWS that,
and who will cooperate across the political party lines in Congress, to solve the
problems that America (obviously) needs to solve. We need a president who
REALLY listens to the people.
What we don't need is more authoritarian (the article would use the word
"fascist") candidates who seriously consider whether or not presidential
immunity would give them the power to stomp our asses, publicly, outside
the fair rule of law in America, if we happen to disagree with him.
It is certain that we will disgree with any future president, on some topic
or another. American democracy allows this freedom.
I am delighted that Kamala Harris is taking the route of enjoying American
democracy, and realizing that freedom has got to be enjoyed.
I am waiting for North American Christians to realize this basic
truth, also.
