Rilian's answer is succinct, and absolutely correct.

According to Saint James, we are justified by works, and not by faith alone. (Read James chapter 2)

We're not justified by faith alone or works alone, but by faith and works.

After all, faith itself is a work.

St. Paul's point about good works is that they are useless apart from faith, and St. James, as you know, said that faith is dead without good works. Faith comes first, but good works must follow.

But within the context of James 2 works are joined with faith, neither comes first rather they happen together at the same time.

Exactly. If I have true faith, works will immediately follow for I will want to share my faith with others. If I do works simply because I love God, it will breed faith in me. In the end you can't honestly have one without the other, and I think that is how God intended it to be.
