According to Saint James, we are justified by works, and not by faith alone. (Read James chapter 2)

We're not justified by faith alone or works alone, but by faith and works.

After all, faith itself is a work.

Exactly. If I have true faith, works will immediately follow for I will want to share my faith with others. If I do works simply because I love God, it will breed faith in me. In the end you can't honestly have one without the other, and I think that is how God intended it to be.
