While Modern Bible Translations can be helpful at times, I believe the King James Bible is the perfect Word of God and it is my final Word of authority; Therefore, I would go with the reading “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:” in 1 Peter 3:15. So we do have to make efforts on our part to sanctify God in our hearts. God is supposed to live in our hearts and we need to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1). We need to always dedicate and prepare our hearts to God in holiness, and draw close to Him whereby He will draw close to us.
AMEN -
Can we therefore conclude that the words of the one thief were sanctifiying to Jesus (1 Peter 3:15). It's obvious the one thief had reason to believe that Jesus was the Messiah ... "remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” ... even though it seems that the disciples were perplexed - confused.
39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
So as a new creation in Christ and the testimony of our Faith to others (by our words) we sanctify Jesus as He sanctifies us. Gives new insight into the words of the thief on the cross that were sanctifying to Jesus (Matthew 23:40-43) with the result that he would be in Paradise with Jesus.
The Psalms of David were sanctifying to the Lord GOD ... the KING of kings
So too are the beautiful Christian songs of worship from our lips sanctifying to HIM
