• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone,

I was prescribed Sodium Valproate a month ago but didnt take them as I was too scared to. I saw the nurse last week and Im in my seventh day on them. I had a major downer on Wednesday and kept bursting into tears and feeling a bit low. Have had horrible insecure dreams and waking up crying. Thankfully, I have been given two days off work which I didnt expect (thank you Lord!!)

Just feeling a bit nauseous, a bit of a headache, dry mouth and a bit sort of dopey if you know what I mean. Im not sure whether I want to feel this way all the time!! Is anyone else on medication and do these symptoms pass?

Would welcome your advice and prayers.

Sarah:prayer:

For some these symptoms do pass as your body adjusts for others they do not and you need then to inform your doc and switch until you find one that works and you can tolerate! So keep in close touch with your doc!! And most importantly be sure you are safe!!! If you r downer is so bad you are becoming suicidal always notify your doc immediately!

Blessings and prayers that you will quickly find the right med for you!!!

Sarah great to hear that you are starting to take medications. Most side effects pass, some stay but usually in lesser form. The best part is that usually after some time the right medications are found and you will enjoy a much more stable life than you have upto now.

I am so happy to hear that you are taking your meds. Some medications will not be suitable for you and have a negative side effect. Monitor your moods and how you feel physically. Tell your doctor if after two weeks you are still not improving, chances are that you need a different kind of combination of meds. It took my doctor 8mos. to find the right dosage and combination for me. My body had many different kinds of reactions, but depression was the worst. Today I am happy to say that I am stable and it has been 4 years. Hang in there and remember to monitor the way you feel.

Thank you all so much. Yesterday afternoon I started to feel a bit more energetic and today I feel pretty good. Some of the earlier symptoms have kind of calmed down a bit, I can still 'feel' them but not feeling as uncomfortable as I was earlier on.

I am keeping a mental diary of my moods and physical feelings.

Thanks again!

Big hugs from across the Atlantic!

Certainly keep notice of how you feel and if the side effects continue to bother you. And make sure to talk about this stuff with your doctor too. It can take a bit of time before the meds are in your system to really start working their magic regularly. And it doesn't make everything better all the time. There may still be the highs and lows, but it shouldn't be as extreme as without medication.

I hope the meds work for you and make your life more comfortable.

Side effects usually depend on the meds and the person. Some medications have side effects that linger for a few weeks or better. Usually til they get in your system. It is good to keep your doc informed of all side effects so he/she will know what to watch for. It's a real bummer having to put up with some of the side effects but, if you can stick it out for a few weeks, you may notice changes for the better. If not, then you may need an adjustment.

God Bless!

Thanks Angelkiss and thank you for my blessings too!

Saw the Doc today (there were 3 of them sat in the room!), we have decided between us that the Sodium Valproate is not for me. I have to try and and hold down two jobs and both jobs are physical and I just cant afford to be dopey or drowsy. I cant remember what they are going to prescribe me but as soon as I know, I will let you know.

I felt good today, less 'medicated' and more in control, but as we know, Mr Manic is a sinister predator waiting to pounce at any time!
