  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

 Hi everyone!

mle, I found a pic of Lb... http://www.modemolay.org/~conclave2003/images/day2sati258.jpg
It took me a little while to find it though.
I like having a face to go with the name..it seems to make it a little more personal. Lb looks like he is having a good time at a party in the picture.

Where has ssv been? I miss him when he doesnt post.

Hi all!

ssv's birthday is today and I miss him too when he doesn't post FP. I get concerned with all the violence that goes on over there.
OK...I apologize...I've been cybernating again. Thank God, but the occasionally acute insanity here is continuing to pass us by. We're all OK. Today is Memorial Day here, or "Remembrance Day for the Fallen of Israel's Wars and Victims of Terror Attacks"; Independence Day starts this evening at nightfall (see http://tinyurl.com/2469g). (I think that it would be much more appropriate in the USA if Memorial Day were July 3; it would make its point far better.) Las night at 20:00 & this morning at 11:00, air-raid sirens went off all over the country, for 1 minute & 2 minutes, respectively. Wherever you are, you stop what you're doing & stand at silent attention until the sirens stop. Cars, busses & trucks on the roads & highways stop & everybody gets out and stands next to their vehicles (see the photo at http://tinyurl.com/2vhwj). It's kinda neat (despite what it's for). 3 years ago, we were zipping along on one of the country's busiest six-lane freeways when the sirens went off. We stopped the car & got out and stood right their on the highway. Last night, we went out & stood on the deck. I held Naor (almost 3.5) and told him that standing during the sirens was how we remembered, "all the brave soldiers and people who are in Heaven so that we could live here in the Land of Israel." When Independence Day festivities get underway tonight, we'll go out & watch the fireworks. Tomorrow, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will have exhibitions all around the country & display jeeps, APCs, ambulances, tanks, etc. Naor & Yohanan (almost 7.5) are looking forward to going to one right in our Jerusalem suburb of Maaleh Adumim (http://www.jr.co.il/ma/); I only pray that that is the closest that they'll ever have to come to such things (but I doubt it; when they turn 18, they go off to the IDF for 3 years). Then tomorrow afternoon, we're having friends over for the traditional barbeque (we've got chorizos, veal fillets & hot dogs to grill). Then tomorrow evening, we drive Wendy's Mom off to the airport & put her on her plane back to Cape Town.

Last Saturday, we (Jews all over the world) read Leviticus 12:1-15:32 in synagogue, in which the laws regarding tzara'at ("leprosy" is a terrible mistranslation; tzara'at is not Hansen's Disease; rather, it was a unique physical-spiritual malady that our Sages understood primarily as a punishment for slander, tale-bearing, etc.). God says (in Leviticus 13:2, 13:9 and 14:2) that the metzora (person with [i[tzara'at; although it could strike clothes & homes too) must be brought before the priest for examination & purification (i.e. people come fetch him & take him to the priest, regardless of whether he is capable of independent motion). Our Sages see a deep lesson here. No matter what a person has done, or thinks he has done, he must never think that he is too far gone to be helped, that what he has done is so awful that he cannot return to either God or decent society, that repentance is useless for him. Thus the metzora is brought before the priest to show him that redemption is possible, that he can return to God.

Thanks for the birthday PM dsdumpling!

Be well!

Hello Everyone!! My name is Lanie and I'm originally from the Philippines and currently living in Colorado. We moved around and for some reason I have a difficult time adjusting from this last move. Thank goodness I found CF and I don't feel as lonely as I used to. I would like it very much to make friends here.

God Bless
Lanie
