  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am a missionary in Zululand, KZN. The mission started just for the zulus, but te AIDS and substance abuse work I does not only stop at the zulus. I do not know if you know the stats, but we hav about 500 000 AIDS orphans in our province alone. The organisation that I work for, Doctors For Life International, have tried to answer the need by looking after 408 children in 29 day care centres. We also run Home Based Care courses, where we teach even the illiterate to take care of the terminally ill. We have trained a couple of thousand volunteers. It is hardbreaking seeing people younger than myself to weak to wipe away a fly. Their parents have to clean them as if they were babies again.

Sorry I ran a away with the point. The mission is about 1 & a half hours drive from Durban. (It is one of the major cities in South Africa).

Hi all!

Good morning from Jerusalem!

Hi Phil! Welcome! My wife (of 15+ wonderful years! ) is originally from Cape Town (Sea Point)! I have been to South Africa 6 times. We drove once to Knysna & visited Oudtshoorn & the Cango Caves. I've been to Paarl & Stellenbosch & up to Saldanha Bay. We were in Jo'burg once but have yet to make it to Durban (although Wendy was there as a girl). You have a beautiful, beautiful country! I hope to see more of it!

So, is everyone proud of Charlize Theron & her Best Actress Oscar?

Be well & be in touch!

Hi Lb!
Are you in the navy? I was always to scared that something might go wrong and it is too far too swim.lol
Hi FP,
I am sorry, but you are too young to be called tannie. You need to be 10 or more yers older than me for that. About the pictures of Africa, I have too many. I just have to get a hundred posts to be able to share them wiyh you. Once I reach 100 I will share. Promise! Oh, if you were wondering, we do not have lions roaming in the street. The only ones I have seen were in zoos, on tv or postcards.

Still small voice, it looks like you know the sound of the saviours voice. It took me quite some time to learn how to hear His voice. If you have been to Stellenbosch, you need not go any place else. I grew up there and spend the first 20 years of my life there. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Have you been to Calvary? I mean that in the literal sense. I know we were all there 2000 years ago. I so want to visit your country and walk the roads Jesus has walked.
It seems though the whole of SA has gone nuts since the academy arwards, except where I stay. There is too much work here and people do not really have time for the movies. We are all going to see the Passion though. It starts here on the 25 of March. We are going to a crusade of Franklin Graham( Billy's son) this weekend and will probably buy our tickets then.

Nice talking to you guys.
God Bless
Phil

Hi all!

Hi Phil!

Um, I'm an orthodox Jew, not a Christian.

If you have been to Stellenbosch, you need not go any place else. I grew up there and spend the first 20 years of my life there.
I've been to the town of Stellenbosch only once, on my very first visit to SA, back in January 1988, when Wendy & I announced our engagement (with ads in the Cape Times & Daily Argus). We drove around the campus & visited the local synagogue. We went to the Afrikaans language memorial in Paarl (or is it in Franchieok?) on that trip. We've been to the wine country (there's one kosher winery) a few times. There's a bunch of ex-pat South Africans in our neighborhood (see the pics: http://www.jr.co.il/ma/pic/ma012.htm); just last Saturday, we had a family over for lunch, the husband got his MD at the University of Stellenbosch (Wendy studied library science at UCT).

Have you been to Calvary?
Yes, I have been to the Church of the Holy Sepulcre in the Old City (http://www.jerusalem.muni.il/jer_sys/picture/atarim/site_form_atar_eng.asp?site_id=52&pic_cat=4&icon_cat=6&york_cat=9) several times.

I so want to visit your country and walk the roads Jesus has walked.
When are you coming? I volunteer to be your personal tour guide! (This goes for everybody!)

It seems though the whole of SA has gone nuts since the academy arwards, except where I stay.
See http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0403090221mar09,1,1986720.story by the Chicago Tribune's Jo'burg correspondent; I saw it on the web on Tuesday.

Be well!

SSV,
I would love to come, but I will have to trust the Lord for a ticket. You see I am a missionary and we do not actually get something as a salary. It will take me quite some time to save up, but I have patience and when I come I will take you up on your offer.
Thank you for the offer.
Phil

Wow Phil, what a mission you are on. We hear the reports of AIDS here but you can't get your brain around it. Such heartbreak. I know you are getting a great blessing from this. Keep strong. God Bless you!

fp, I've had a horrible week this week at work and all I can do is pray that next week is better. Thanks for asking...I don't want to whine about this. There are people worse off in the world than I.

 to you all!

Hi Tannie Dawn,
I was wondering when you will wake up. It is true that we are hard work with all the AIDS patients, but while they are lying on their beds they are so open for the Gospel. As soon as I can I will post some pictures to show you the reality. It is a great experience to see the change in a person when he excepts Christ.
Not long ago a rastafarian(I hope that is spelled right) came to the Lord through one of our home based carers. Soon after that he had a dream. He saw the new Jerusalem across a lake and he realy longed to be there, but had no way to cross the lake. The lake was also in the rastafarian colours red, green, yellow and black. Then next to him a saw another man. He soon realised that this man is Jesus and Jesus asked him if he wants to go to the new Jerusalem and he said with all his heart. Jesus then took him by the hand and led him through the lake. The lake opened up just like the sea did for Moses and Israel after they left Egipt. Two weeks later this man died in peace and I believe with my whole heart that he is with the Father in Heaven.

I thank the Lord that I can be a part of this work. Please keep our work in your prayers.
Phil

Phil, do you attend church? What kind of churches do they have in S. Africa.

I bring up prayer requests in church from requests from friends here on CF and also from the persecuted church throughout the world. I will mention yours on Sunday so my whole church (very small @ 50) will be praying for the missionaries and also those who you minister to.

Yes I do and we have allkind of churches from reformed to Catholic, from Baptist to Seven Day Aventists( Ithink that is how you spell it). Then we also have some funny traditional ones. One guy believed he was God, jumped of a cliff and died. He still has some followers today. The religion is called Shembe and it is mixed wit a lot of christianity.
We are a denominational church and cater mostly for Zulus. There is also a lot of missionaries that come year for a rest or just to be quiet infont of the Lord. We also have branches in France, Romania, Switzerland,Netherlands and Germany. Christians for Thruth also have their head office here.
I hope I have answered your question Tannie.
PS: Thanks for the blessings
Phil

Hi all!

It's 15:13 here (at my Jerusalem office) & I'm getting ready to go off to do our Shabbat shopping. This Shabbat's readings are Exodus 30:11-34:35, Numbers 19:1-22 and Ezekiel 36:16-38.

The reading from Ezekiel discusses how our physical return to the Land of Israel will be matched/mirrored by our spiritual return to God. Are we not seeing both, now, in our generations, especially since 1948?

Be well! Shabbat Shalom!

ssv, have a wonderful Shabbat!

Phil, is afrikaans a lot like the Dutch language?

I sound like a 4-year old...don't I ask a lot of questions. My oldest daughter was so inquisitive at the age of 4, everything I would say, she would say Why? My youngest was two at the time and would just listen. She learned all the answers her older sister would ask. Kids....ssv, time flys when they are your kids ages. Hug them while you can, when they are teenagers they only let you hug them when no one is around.

Yes tannie. It is also close to Flemish. We always joke and say that Dutch is actually Afrikaans with a couple of spelling mistakes.

Where in the States do you live? I have some Russian friends there. Their parents were in jail for their faith when they were still staying in Russia. Once they were freed they moved to the states. Some of them can not even remember Russia, because they were too small. Others were born in America.
