  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all!

FervidPrincess & lbiagm, the hotel has undergone considerable renovations since Wendy & I were married there 15+ years (!) ago.

TherapyDogLove, I agree with your statement that, "God put dogs in our life to show us his kind of love"! I remember when I was in 7th grade (I'm 40 now) & was very sick with the measles. For two days, I was really out of it & just laid on the couch (I insisted on gettiing out of bed in the morning & trudging downstairs to lay on the couch; Mom brought down my blankets & pillow). Goldie, our German Shepherd female, laid on the floor next to the couch (where I could reach down & pet her) and hardly moved the whole time I was there.

Hello to all the newbies (InHim23, New_Hope & Abstract Devotion)!

I went to an early morning prayer service yesterday morning for our jolly, carnival-like holyday of Purim (see http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday9.htm) at 05:45. As I was walking up the hill behind our apartment to synagogue in the traditional Purim chill, I smiled & reflected on how wonderful God has been to Wendy & I. Back before we adopted Yohanan (in May 1997) Purim used to be very difficult for me; I used to dread it. I would go to a late prayer service & Book of Esther reading on Purim night & an early one Purim morning because it was just too painful seeing all the young fathers & their children rejoicing in the holyday together. I'd go to the late/early readings because I knew that there would be very few children there & thus I could concentrate on the Esther reading without being so glaringly reminded of our aloneness. But now I go to an early reading on Purim morning, so I can be back home & help Wendy when Da Boyz (Yohanan & Naor) wake up & can mind Naor when Wendy & Yohanan (now 7 & in first grade) go to a later Esther reading (and so I can concentrate on the Esther reading without being so glaringly reminded of our un-aloneness, i.e. by having Naor climbing on me!). I'm still going to early morning prayers & Esther reading but now it is wonderful, thank God!

In Israel, Purim is like Halloween in the USA, ie. the kids dress up in costumes. Naor dressed up as a fireman. I told him that we could take some Purim holyday goodies to the local fire station. Naturally, he was very excited. We went down there yesterday. The cadet fireman who was up & about & the volunteers with him were 101% gentlemen! They gave Da Boyz the complete tour & showed them all the equipment, let them sit behind the wheel of one of the fire engines, ran out a hose & shpritzed it, etc. Naor was amazed that the tires on the fire engine were taller than he is! It was just wonderful being there with Da Boyz & seeing the wonder & excitement in their eyes (thank God for blessing Wendy & I with such boys!).

Be well!

Hello everybody! Welcome newbies! SSV- I've been to a Purim celebration before. I was around 5 I guess. I dressed up as a dancer. My best friend of the time dressed as Esther and she won a prize. I liked the reading of Esther with the responses. We cheered for Esther and booed Haaman.

Hi all!

Yes, I like Purim alot, now.

Try these:

he [Ahasuerus] commanded...to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the peoples and the princes her beauty; for she was fair to look on. But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command...
(1:11-12)

Our Sages discern something curious in that Ahasuerus ordered that Vashti appear in public with her crown on, just before a reference to her being a knockout. Don't queens usually wear their crowns, especially in public? Our Sages teach that Ahasuerus, whose heart, "was merry with wine," wanted Vashti to appear wearing only her crown. Not surprisingly, she refused!

Look at 5:13, in which Haman says:

...this avails me nothing...
Rabbi A. J. Rosenberg writes: "Bachya http://www.ou.org/about/judaism/rabbis/pakuda.htm points out that the last letters of the Hebrew words are the Tetragrammaton in reversed order. He [Haman] stated with contempt, 'this avails me nothing,' meaning that God meant nothing to him."

Now with Purim (and the many hamantaschen consumed thereon) under our belts, it's time to begin to think about beginning to clean the apartment for Passover http://www.jewfaq.org/holidaya.htm. Think of the preparations that Hannibal would have had to make before crossing the Alps & you can sort of get an idea of what this entails (see the above link; scroll down to the 7th paragraph). Of course, Hannibal didn't have to deal with the mess-creating potential of having Yohanan & Naor in the house!

Be well!
