Isn't speaking, reading, and writing English a requirement to become a United States citizen? Isn't a requirement of voting that one be a United States citizen?

If so, then isn't it a requirement for voting that one be able to speak, read, and write English?

Not really. A child can be born in this country of an illegal immigrant, grow up never learning English, and still vote.

I think it may be required for citizenship that you pass a rather simple and easy English language test (considering that most born in the US Americans cannot even speak and write their own language properly!), but such tests certainly only would test a minimal ability to understand and communicate in this language. liek saying "Yes" and "No" and "You're place or mine"!

yeah its sad, but this lady most likely came to this country illegally.

There are a large number of mexicans in this country legally, far more then are here illegally. It seems to me to smack of racism that all mexicans are presumed illegal until found legal.

I, for example am African, and most people have no idea the struggle one has to go through to come to the states.

I know exactly what it's like to get someone to the states, and yet I still sympathize with the migrant workers who are here doing our grunt labor and dirt cheap prices.

Compared to that hoping the boarder is a cake walk. And learning English is the least of immigrant’s problems...in fact it should be the first thing they do.

Lots of people die each year crossing the boarder, and then their problems just begin. Trying to find food, clothing, housing for their families, all while making less than minimum wage. Take a stroll through the shanty towns on the boarder of the US and Mexico, and you won't say their lives are a cake walk.

There is a large hispanic population where I live. Many of the adults speak some English, but with difficulty. However, almost all of their children speak perfect English. Give it time, they will eventually learn to assimilate - just like our ancestors did. Think about it - unless you are native American, your ancestors were once aliens (legal or illegal) too.

As someone mentioned, yes, there are illegal immigrants from mexico, there are also more legal ones. We don't have an offical language, so it is ridiculous to require a nonoffical language to be a qualifier in whether or not a woman can keep her kids.Six months is not much time for an adult with children to learn a language. Especially if they are also working, doing usual parenting type things.

Learn 4th grade english in 6 months???

4th Grade English isn't that difficult. Its forming complete sentences using nouns and verbs. Billy Madison did it in 8 weeks

On to a more serious note. THere are many immigrants of many ethnicities in these areas. The US welcomes all of those who come here legally. if you jump the border and run in, that degrades everybody who has fought for their right to come live here and be productive to society. That is wrong, plain and simple, and in the end, hurts those who come over illegally. The process to come over here is free, and you are even allowed to live here while your documentation is processed. I have a friend who migrated from Germany, and he is more furious at the illegal immigration problem than I am.
