Joyful noise or noisy gong?

I was listening to some 80's rock and it sounded like a bunch of noise. It got me thinking about what sounds good to God? Paul teaches us that love is a sweet smelling aroma to God. What then sounds good to God? Does our clamoring sound like noisy symbols in a noisy rock band? Does God turn the station when He hears our noise? What is a joyful noise?

That is so interesting, I look forward to hearing the music in heaven. Yes, what is a joyful noise? I have always had a leaning towards more easy listening music. Classics or popular, so the 'music' pouring out of the speaker system at full volume in Church creates a problem for me...(I have seriously considered ear plugs) What must it sound like to the Father?

I believe one joyful noise might be quietness. 1 Peter 3:4

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

seeing Paul is not re-instituting the law upon women and neither is he in error then this must have a deeper meaning :)

do you know ...

I'd say God is pleased whenever someone sings the psalms- or any hymns, for that matter. And didn't He specifically instruct people to sing/play instruments in the Temple?

I would say that these qualify as "joyful noise".

But surely not noisy CD's ...not even live Church musicians...

I think that God is happy to hear any sound of praise directed to Him. Recall the shouts of praise commanded from those that marched around Jericho.

In a church setting, however, you have to have consideration for the people. Everybody is not up for cacophony, especially in a confined setting. Scripture says that there is a correct time and place for everyhing.

We have to learn to use the right music in the right setting ...

Not a fan of 80s either! yuck lol.

Re the OP
I think our own understnading of what makes God happy
is clouded by our heritage and upbringing.

King David shouted and danced half naked before the Lord.
He was overcome with joy and his wife was disgusted with
his display of jubilance.

At my church we love to sing out! We might clap and sway
a little. We have a saxophone player, keys etc.
We worship with gusto!
Then, other times, as the Spirit moves us, we get very
quiet and serious and some will kneel etc. and you could
hear a pin drop.
So maybe it depends partly on what you're comfortable
with but I'm thining God wants us to worship Him with our
voices, with our bodies, with our wallets, with our instruments
with our entire life and being.

Praise Him with trumpet sound;
Praise Him with harp and lyre.
Praise Him with timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.…

So if it feels worshipful to you to sing a hymn, our God will
not reject your sacrifice of praise, will He?
If someone shouts alleluia , overcome with joy just to be alive,
because her life's been a living hell, and now she has met Jesus
and cant help but cry out; well, she has Jesus too so.

Sounds like a cool church. My original intention was not made clear. When i mentioned clamor i was referring not to music but to our contentious debates.
