Jonah and Holy Communion

So it can be translated as huge fish, huge sea monster, or huge whale?

Did the early Church fathers comment on it? If so, did they believe that it was a fish?

Here are some comments from the Church Fathers. Doesn't seem like they were too concerned with whether it was a great fish or a whale - the interpretation is the same.

Maybe it was a whale shark (which is actually a fish).

"The largest fish in the sea, the whale shark can reach lengths of 40 feet (12 meters) or more. The gentle giants are filter feeders, swimming with their wide mouths open to collect plankton and small fish." Source
