• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So in Physics today (I lead a very exciting life...) we were talking about Halloween costumes and of the girls told us about a friend who dressed up as a "child molester" which apparently includes a wife beater, creepy mustache, and a sign that says "candy in pockets"

Now, I was abused as a child and I don't understand how in the world anyone would think that was funny. I don't get it. Why would you think that was a good idea? But I hear this a lot, a guy joking about child pronography, someone else being flippany about pedophilia, and I wonder how they don't get that the person right next to them might have been hurt by that kind of stuff, and they don't think it's funny at all.

So if you'll excuse me, I'll go take the medicine I'm taking to help me deal with PTSD 9 years later. That's funny too, right?

Because some people just don't understand. :( A lot of people seem to forget that others have been through some of the things they are joking about - to them it doesn't happen in the 'real world'..
But I do know how you feel. I had a similar experience with a friend joking about abuse while I was next to her. :(
Sending lots of 's and :prayer:'s. I know how hard it is.

Let them turn up at my door and I'll talk (lecture?) long enough that they don't think it's funny again. That sort of thing makes me so angry...there is nothing funny about another person's pain :(.

Thanks for y'all's support

I'm just really struggling with depression and stuff right now and this kind of stuff doesn't help. Especially when it sometimes comes from a friend who knows what I went through. I don't think she doesn't it on purpose, but she can be so insensitive :(

I completely understand on campus here at MSU a lot of people think yelling "Rape" is funny and it kills me inside everytime I hear it, I was raped just a few years ago. I also understand about your 9 years of PTSD untreated mine lasted 6 years untreated, not quite as long but I definately know where your comming from. If you need to talk more I'm here for you.

I agree. What's even worse is the image that all child molester's look like that. Often times they are the clean-cut, well-mannered guy that would do anything for anyone and everyone loves.

It truly makes me sick to my stomach every time I hear a "Red-Neck" incest joke.

How can people be so insensitive? Why would they want someone else to hurt more?

Honestly, I think people don't realise just how many people there are out there who have been hurt :(. Far too often we assume that everyone else must have our story as well and we forget to consider that life happens differently for everyone. This is certainly no excuse though.

A friend of mine posted a sexist joke in a bulletin on MySpace, it really hurt to see that because that joke made light of women being treated like animals. My friend deleted it when I told her I found it extremely triggering and offensive, though. I tell the odd joke in bad taste but never in front of people I know will be hurt.

Did you know that most hardcore slasher movies portray the villain as having physical oddities or being unkempt? I think a lot of the stereotypical image comes from that. To date I have only seen a very few clean-cut, sophisticated serial killers in movies. Society has a habit of demonizing the ugly that goes way, way back. Sorry for derailing, just wanted to explain where I think the "ugly psychopath" image comes from. My abuser was the perfect gentleman, very clean-cut, very organized and tidy--the last person you'd suspect of harming an innocent child.

I'm sorry, but to me ingorance for what we've been through isn't a good excuse. People should know those types of "jokes" aren't ok.

Oh, definitely.

I'm not excusing it. If someone makes light of sexual assault where I can hear or see it, I get ticked off and tell them they are inconsiderate and thoughtless.

I think people have the ability to think things through before they say them...many people just choose not to. Believing that there are people out there who have been hurt means believing that someone close to you has been hurt to. Then again, others just don't understand how much it can hurt another person.

I don't excuse people just because they didn't think through what they were saying. I was never hurt like this, but family and friends have been. That I haven't been through it doesn't give me a reason to ignore that others are in pain and if someone makes light of it, I'll lecture them on stats and flashbacks and triggers until they think before they speak.
