Eddie Slovik was the last soldier to be executed for desertion during WW2. We had about 49 cases altogether, but his was the only person executed. Most get jailed. I had a soldier run off and disappeared for 9 months. He went on leave and never returned, until the police pulled him over for speeding. He served 6 months in Leavenworth. We have had a lot of deserters during OIF/OEF if you want to know. I don't know the number, but that is one of 5 guys I know first hand who deserted.
I think the guy was a moron, not a traitor. He should definitely get some jail time. I am thinking though that the years of torture might be taken into account during his sentencing. He paid a hefty price for his error.
Does the military execute mentally ill people? Wasn't he thrown out of the Coast Guard due to mental issues? And then the Army either overlooked that or took him anyway?
But I do agree if he's a traitor as well as a deserter wouldn't the UCMJ demand an execution?
