  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It ain't necessarily so
It ain't necessarily so
The t'ings dat yo' li'ble
To read in de Bible
It ain't necessarily so.

Li'l David was small, but oh my!
Li'l David was small, but oh my!
He fought big Goliath
Who lay down an' dieth!
Li'l David was small, but oh my!

Wadoo, zim bam boddle-oo
Hoodle ah da wa da
Scatty wah!
Oh yeah!

Oh Jonah, he lived in de whale
Oh Jonah, he lived in de whale
Fo' he made his home in
Dat fish's abdomen
Oh Jonah, he lived in de whale

Li'l Moses was found in a stream
Li'l Moses was found in a stream
He floated on water
Till Ol' Pharaoh's daughter
She fished him, she said, from dat stream

Wadoo...
Well, it ain't necessarily so
Well, it ain't necessarily so
Dey tells all you chillun
De debble's a villun,
But it ain't necessarily so!

To get into Hebben
Don' snap for a sebben!
Live clean! Don' have no fault!
Oh, I takes dat gospel
Whenever it's pos'ble
But wid a grain of salt

Methus'lah lived nine hundred years
Methus'lah lived nine hundred years
But who calls dat livin'
When no gal will give in
To no man what's nine hundred years?

I'm preachin' dis sermon to show
It ain't nece-ain't nece
Ain't nece-ain't nece
Ain't necessarily...so!

"It Ain't Necessarily So" is a popular song with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. The song comes from the Gershwins' opera Porgy and Bess (1935) where it is sung by the character Sportin' Life, a drug dealer, who expresses his doubt about several statements in the Bible.

Not sure if I'm spoiling a good song for you or not, buddy. And Hello, btw! Hadn't talked to you in a while.

Anyway, these lyrics are ... I hate to use such strong wording here, but the only thing that comes to mind is Satanic. This is a Sympathy for the Devil song (see Rolling Stone's song by this title), which in the process calls into repeated question faith and trust in the authenticity of God's word.

The other thing that comes to mind here is that there have been countless musicians down through history who literally sold their souls to the Devil for fame and fortune. Whether this guy was one of them, I have no idea. But these lyrics are an offense to God, and an outright attack against placing faith in Him and His word.

nothing wrong with doubt in my opinion.
Don’t let doubt take root in your soul. Turn doubt over to Christ. Saturate your heart and mind every day with the truths in God’s Word, the Bible. Satan tries to turn us away from Christ at every oppoutunity. When we lean on Christ “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).

There is good doubt and bad doubt. I seem to have both. :)

Always appreciating your input, Hidden.
Satanic? Well I'm not sure I feel exactly the same as you on that score. But I agree that celebrity singers are tempted to sell their soul a lot. Thanks again

The diffference with Sympathy for the Devil is it is sung from the Devil's point of view and we know he is a liar. But he says he was there when Christ was crucified and when Kennedy was assassinated (which I think is very true).

I din't see Sympathy for the Devil to be blasphemous while this one clearly is.

No sweat. It all kinda depends not only on this guy's intentions, but also on the spiritual climate in which the song was written. If this was during a time when there was already a great deal of doubt concerning the accuracy of God's word, then it would come off more as a simple decrying of the Biblical literalism of the time, for whatever reason.

Depends on the guy's motivations, and what he was ultimately after.

God calls on us to trust Him completely and totally—and when we doubt, we aren’t trusting Him as we should. The Bible warns that the person who constantly doubts God and fails to trust Him “is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does” (James 1:8).
