[B] THE BIBLE'S ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE:

(1900=Abraham, 1700=Joseph, 1447=Moses, 1000=David):

PINDENT.GIF
PINDENT.GIF
What has become evident over the last few decades is that unlike the difficulties found with the Qur'anic evidence, the most fruitful area for a confirmation of the Bible's reliability has come from the field of archaeology, for it is here that the past can speak to us the clearest concerning what happened then.

PINDENT.GIF
PINDENT.GIF
Because Abraham is honoured by both Christianity and Islam it is interesting to look at the archaeological evidence concerning his time which is now coming to light in the twentieth century. What we find is that archaeology clearly places Abraham in Palestine and not in Arabia.

PINDENT.GIF

1) Abraham's name appears in Babylonia as a personal name at the very period of the patriarchs, though the critics believed he was a fictitious character who was redacted back by the later Israelites.

PINDENT.GIF
PINDENT.GIF
PINDENT.GIF
2) The field of Abram in Hebron is mentioned in 918 B.C., by the Pharaoh Shishak of Egypt (now also believed to be Ramases II). He had just finished warring in Palestine and inscribed on the walls of his temple at Karnak the name of the great patriarch, proving that even at this early date Abraham was known not in Arabia, as Muslims contend, but in Palestine, the land the Bible places him.

The ancient synagogue of Beit Alpha is located in the Beit She'an Valley, in the north-east of the country. The nearby ruins of Khirbet Beit Ilfa preserve the ancient name.

The mosaic floor of the synagogue was discovered in 1929, when members of Kibbutz Beit Alpha dug irrigation channels for their fields. Excavations were carried out the same year, exposing mosaics preserved intact for almost 1,500 years. Later excavations, in the early 1960s, exposed remains of some houses, indicating that the synagogue had stood in a Jewish village of the Byzantine period (5th-6th centuries).

The synagogue is oriented southwards, toward Jerusalem. It measures 20 x 14 m. and consists of a courtyard (atrium), a vestibule (narthex) and a prayer hall. The walls are of undressed stone, with plastered inner and outer faces.

The courtyard is reached from the street, via an opening in its western wall. It measures 10 x 7 m. and is paved with mosaics in geometric designs.

The 2.5 m.-wide vestibule has two doors in its northern wall facing the courtyard and three doorways in its southern wall providing access to the prayer hall. Its mosaic floor is also in geometric patterns.

The prayer hall measures 10 x 8 m. and is divided by two rows of stone-built pillars into a central nave and two side aisles. The pillars probably supported the arches and the gabled roof of the synagogue. Scholars assume that there was a second storey above the two aisles and the vestibule, serving as a women's gallery. Benches were built along the long walls and along the southern wall of the prayer hall. A door in the western wall led into a side room.

An apse, a rounded raised recess 2.4 m. deep, was built into the southern wall of the synagogue and served as a bema on which the Torah Ark stood, with three steps leading up to it. At a later time, another bema in the shape of a bench was added between the two southern pillars on the eastern side of the prayer hall. A one meter-deep depression lined with stones below the floor of the bema probably served as the synagogue's treasury. When opened during the excavations it contained thirty-six Byzantine bronze coins.

The mosaic floor of the prayer hall

The entire prayer hall is paved in mosaic. The floor of the western aisle is decorated with squares in geometric patterns; the eastern aisle is entirely paved in undecorated white mosaic.

Two dedicatory inscriptions, one in Aramaic and one in Greek, are situated just inside the main entrance to the prayer hall, flanked by a lion and a bull facing each other. The Aramaic inscription states that the mosaic floor was laid during the reign of Emperor Justin (probably Justin I, beginning of the 6th century) and that the cost was covered by donations from members of the community. The Greek inscription reads: May the craftsmen who carried out this work, Marianos and his son Hanina, be held in remembrance.

The colorful mosaic floor of the nave is divided into three distinct panels, all enclosed by a decorated band with a variety of motifs: geometric patterns, fruit, birds and animals. The panels depict, from north to south:

The binding of Isaac as described in Genesis 22:1-19. On the right is an altar with flames rising from it. Abraham stands next to it, one hand holding his son Isaac and the other a long knife. The names of Abraham and Isaac are inscribed above the figures. A hand emerges from a cloud above Abraham and Isaac, symbolizing the angel of God. Nearby are the Hebrew words meaning "lay not your hand [upon the lad]". The ram and the two servants with the donkey are depicted behind Abraham.

The Bible has a verse that I've wondered about for some time:

"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of..."

- Genesis 22:2

Note in the above verse the words "thine only son...." followed by "Isaac". The Hebrew word for "only" is "yachiyd"

Take now * laqach
thy son, * ben *
thine only* yachiyd

which means "only, only one, solitary, one".

Consider that Ishmael would clearly be Abraham's "only son" for thirteen years before the birth of Isaac. The verse doesn't say: "Take your son Isaac".

Just to me an interesting point.

The Qur'anic story also has a different dimension to it than the Biblical story... It has
the following:

Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"

.....

So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

- Surah 37:102

So here the son encourages his father, Abraham, to carry out the sacrifice and they both submit to God's will.

The name "Ishmael" is not specifically mentioned in the actual text in this regard.

In the Bible story Isaac asks his father:

"Look here are the fire and the knife and the wood but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" (Indeed a poignant question...) and Abraham replies: "My son, God himslef will provide the lamb fir the burnt offering" Then the two went on together." - Genesis 22:7-8

Both the Bible and the Qur'an it seems to me address the issue of submitting to the will of God and the important element to me is that Abraham is called by God to sacrifice his son whether it be Isaac or Ishmael.

This is a foreshadowing of the story of Jesus and is also reflected in a parable told by Him:

"Then the owner of the vinyard said: "what am I to do?" (After the tenants had treated his servants shamefully who had been sent to collect the rent) I will send my son, Perhaps they will respect him". But when the tenants saw him theyput their heads together "This is the heir" they said "let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours". So they threw him out of the vinyard and killed him.

- Luke 20:9-15

I don't think we can really discuss some of these points unless we approach the topic in a humble way.

When the Jews are found to convert an Israelite into an Ishmaelite , when no motives are involved, then how much easier for them to change the word “your only son ISHMAEL” to your only son ISACC!” take a look at this:-

2Sa 17:25 And Absalom put Amasa at the head of the army in place of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had been the lover of Abigail, the daughter of Jesse, sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother.
1Ch 2:17 And Abigail was the mother of Amasa; and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.

for thousands of years the story of Abraham and his son Ishmael had benn known to Arabs in the Holy city of Mekkah where Hajar and Ishmael settled on the orders of the Almighty God to Abraham.

in few weeks Muslims from all over the world will go to Makkah to perform Hajj, which revolves around the events of the lives of Abraham and his wife & son Ishmael.

one of the Haj rituals is walking between two hills named Safa and Marwahwhich are close to AlKaabah

When God ordered Abraham Pbuh to take his wife Hajar and their baby son Ishmael to live in Makkah, he put them in the Faran desert where there were no people or water.
he gave them some food and water and went back to Palestine, when the water was finished , they became very thirsty , Ismael started crying, she put him at Safa and climbed Marwa to see if there was any persons coming towards them , so she asks for water, she did not see anybody, so she decended from Marwa , went back to her baby at Safa , tried to comfort him, but failed to do so , because he was thirsty , so she left him again and ascended the Maraw in another attempt to see some persons coming towards them in the hopes of asking them for water. she did that 7 times failed in all of them, when she returned the 7th time she saw the Archangel Gabriel , He hit the ground , pure water gushed out , she went to the water, collected some of it with her hands, gave it to her baby and drank. that spring is still there supplying water to millions of pilgrims and Mekkans since then. it is called zamzam which is mentioned in psalm 84:6

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia quotes the following from A.S. Fulton:
". . . Of the Ishmaelite tribes, Kedar must have been the most important and thus in later times the name came to be applied to all the wild tribes of the desert. It is though Kedar (Arab KEidar) that Muslim genealogists trace the descent of Muhammad from Ishmael."
(c) ". . . he (Muhammad pbuh) shined forth from mount Paran (in Arabia), and he came with ten thousand saints. DEUTERONOMY 33:2. (Referring to the conquest of Mecca). (d) " . . and I (God Almighty) will move them (the Jews) to jealousy with those (the Arabs) which are NOT A PEOPLE (a non-entity): I will provoke them (the Jews) to anger with a FOOLISH NATION," |the pre-Islamic Arabs) DEUTERONOMY 32:21

In the NIV Genesis 16:Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. Apparently wife can mean any woman 802. 'ishshah, ish-shaw'; fem. of H376 or H582; irregular plur. nashiym, naw-sheem'; a woman (used in the same wide sense as H582):--[adulter]ess, each, every, female, X many, + none, one, + together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English.and in 20:7 Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet. So Abraham was a prophet and Hagar was a woman. The word for wife and adulteress are the same word but abram married Sarai in 11:29 Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, the first timme Hagar is mentioned is in 16:1.

The plain fact is, they have found ancient Hebrew fact that it was Isaac who was the one who was offered up to be sacrificed. Archeologists are working on Archeological proofs of the Bible continually because they have proven it's reliability.

In Genesis 22:2 God probably didn't say take your son your only son Isaac, He said take your son your only beloved son Isaac. Abraham had another son but God told him to take Isaac chances are good that Abraham loved Ishmael too, but God told him to take Isaac and go to the mountain to sacrifice. The words are ben for son, yachiyd, Yitschaq.
3173. yachiyd, yaw-kheed'; from H3161; prop. united, i.e. sole; by impl. beloved; also lonely: (fem.) the life (as not to be replaced):--darling, desolate, only (child, son), solitary.
3327. Yitschaq, yits-khawk'; from H6711; laughter (i.e. mockery); Jitschak (or Isaac), son of Abraham:--Isaac. Comp. H3446.
yachidz means only and implies beloved and then Isaac, it doesn't have a second word for son so God says take your son your only beloved Isaac and go to the mountain and sacrifice. I have heard that he got his orders mixed up and was going to kill Isaac instead of an animal. I don't know about that but I don't find another word for son in the new American standard exhaustive concordance or the Strong's. So they should not have put it in the book. Not that Ishmael wasn't beloved but his name wasn't Isaac. i don't think Ishmael was living with Abraham and Sarah at the time and that may have had something to do with it.

Consider that the Lord Jesus Himself gave the "works of Abraham" a high place in the following verse:

"They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham"

- John 8:39

But we should not conveniently forget the following verses...

John 8:53 - Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

John 8:56 - Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

John 8:57 - Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

John 8:58 - Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Jesus' mission as Son of God to make salvation attainable to every living being, not just the physical descendants of Abraham.

The only way the gentiles become the descendants of Abraham is through faith.

Abraham, David, Solomon, while they may or may not be considered prophets, Jesus was and is the Son of God. And Jesus' physical ancestor was Isaac and not Ishmael.

Maybe this gets too oppositional for some people to look at but I think many today could be descendants of Abraham after so many centuries and generations...through the tribes spread out over the earth in diasporas...through the Arabis and Jewish peoples as well as those in the "east country".

I also agree that the concept of spiritual descent has validity too!

Abraham also had other wives beside Sarah, Hagar, namely Keturah as described in Genesis 25:1-4 and the children of Keturah. He sent his children eastward, to the "east country". Possibly this could mean Harran of further east.

The line of prophets that passed from Isaac was recognized also in the Qur'an.

The lineage of Muhammad was traced back to Abraham through Hagar.

Note that the Bible mentions both Ishmael and Isaac together "buried him (Abraham) in the cave of Machpelah" in Genesis 25:9 so the two at least were together for that occasion and we should remember that.

And remember the ancient or eternal covenant mentioned in Genesis 17:7 was with all the descendents of Abraham.

Yes, we cannot overlook that fact in the Bible. Isaac was the ONLY son of the Covenant. The boys were half brothers.

That is according to the Bible of today. But regardless of who was sacrificed Ishmael was still a richeous servant of God and the kingdom of God was taken from Isaacs decendents(children of Israel) and given to Ishmael's decendents(Muslims).

Abraham was not a prophet in the Bible; so your reasoning is off. Prophets were sinners just like everyone else.

My reply:

But how can Abraham not be a prophet?

What did the Lord Jesus say about Abraham?

"And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven."

- Matthew 8:11

"There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you [yourselves] thrust out."

- Luke 13:28

It would seem to me that the Lord Jesus Himself placed Abraham in the Kingdom of Heaven and classified Him as a prophet.

peaceful soul wrote:

They (the Prophets) are special in the sense that God ordained them to resue ("rescue"?) His word/message from distortion and to be a beacon of light to bring them back home to obedience to God. To say that they had no faults is ridiculous. The problem again is applying Islamic beliefs and concepts to a non-Islamic book.

My response:

Consider that the Lord Jesus Himself gave the "works of Abraham" a high place in the following verse:

"They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham"

- John 8:39

peaceful soul wrote:

The relationship of Abraham and Hagar was not blessed by God; therefore, the promise of God could not be carried through that union. God promised that Sarai would bear a child with Abraham despite their disbelief due to her age and her inability to bear a child up to that point. We have surely discussed this in quite detail just recently. It would do you good to search the site for our discussions.

My reply:

If the angel of the Lord announced that God "hath heard thy afflication" to Hagar it would seem she and the child were blessed.

"And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou [art] with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction."

- Genesis 16:11

And read the following:

"And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he [is]."

- Genesis 21:17

God blessed Hagar and Ishmael and heard them and said "fear not..."

The Bible says Ishamel was Abraham's son:

"And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which [is] before Mamre..."

Genesis 25:9

"Now these [are] the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham..."

Genesis 25:12

Ishmael is blessed by God in the following verse:

"And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation."

Genesis 17:20

In Genesis 17:7 God says He will establish His covenant with all the descendents of Abraham:

"And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee."

and in Genesis 17:9

"And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations."

It's true that to Isaac is the immediate Covenant:

As found in Genesis 17:21 "But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year."

But the eternal Covenant is with all the descendents of Abraham which would include Ishmael and his descendents.

I never thought of Abraham as a prrophet but he was Gen 20:7 calls him a prophet 030. nabiy', naw-bee'; from H5012; a prophet or (gen.) inspired man:-, I guess the Muslims do know something. just joking.
about hagar and Ishmael, Hagar was called Saria gave her to abram to be his wife. So i guess you could say hagar was abrams wife but the word for wife just means a woman. 802. 'ishshah, ish-shaw'; fem. of H376 or H582; irregular plur. nashiym, naw-sheem'; a woman (used in the same wide sense as H582):--[adulter]ess, each, every, female, X many, + none, one, + together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English. They were both his women but only sarai was married to him. hagar was a servant girl. I don't think anybody denies that Ishmael was Abraham's son the question was was he offered or was Isaac. According to the bible Isaac was offered 22:1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
2 Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you."
6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
8 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of them went together.
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" So he said, "Here I am."
12 And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

Who took the promise from Ishmael and how was this accomplished? Does the Qu'ran explain how this was done or is this your speculation? Where is the source of your belief? Who says that Ismael was a righteous servant of God?

Yes and in many places. here are some:-
(1)
Isa 42:9 See, the things said before have come about, and now I give word of new things: before they come I give you news of them.
Isa 42:10 Make a new song to the Lord, and let his praise be sounded from the end of the earth; you who go down to the sea, and everything in it, the sea-lands and their people.
Isa 42:11 Let the waste land and its flocks be glad, the tent-circles of Kedar; let the people of the rock give a glad cry, from the top of the mountains let them make a sound of joy.
Isa 42:12 Let them give glory to the Lord, sounding his praise in the sea-lands.
Isa 42:13 The Lord will go out as a man of war, he will be moved to wrath like a fighting-man: his voice will be strong, he will give a loud cry; he will go against his attackers like a man of war.
Isa 42:14 I have long been quiet, I have kept myself in and done nothing: now I will make sounds of pain like a woman in childbirth, breathing hard and quickly.
Isa 42:15 I will make waste mountains and hills, drying up all their plants; and I will make rivers dry, and pools dry land.
Isa 42:16 And I will take the blind by a way of which they had no knowledge, guiding them by roads strange to them: I will make the dark places light before them, and the rough places level. These things will I do and will not give them up.
Isa 42:17 They will be turned back and be greatly shamed who put their hope in pictured images, who say to metal images, You are our gods.
Isa 42:18 Give ear, you whose ears are shut; and let your eyes be open, you blind, so that you may see.
Isa 42:19 Who is blind, but my servant? who has his ears stopped, but he whom I send? who is blind as my true one, or who has his ears shut like the Lord's servant?

Prophet Isaiah is considered to be one of the major prophets of the Old Testament. In the Book of Isaiah there are several prophecies about the coming of the Messiah. In chapter 42, Isaiah begins with a prophecy for the coming of prophet Jesus. After verse number nine, God declares through Isaiah, the "new things" that are to "spring forth" in the Land of Kedar.
In the Bible there is only one personality called Kedar. He was the grandson of prophet Abraham, through his son Ishmael (see Gen. 25:13). Kedar's descendants had settled in Paran (Syno-Arabian dessert). In the Rabbinic literature Arabia is called the "Land of Kedar". Prophet Muhammad was a descendant of Kedar.
God declares through Prophet Isaiah;
"Behold, the former things are come to pass, and the new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. `Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth'. Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voices, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare His praise in the inlands." Isaiah Chapter 42, Verses 9-12.

God did reveal in the Land of Kedar, through prophet Muhammad - a direct descendant of Kedar, a "New Song" - The Qur'an (Koran). This happens to be the only Scripture to be revealed in the language of the Kedarites. The verses of the Qur'an are recited like a poem. Nearly 1.2 billion Muslims, residing all over the world, recite this "new song" and Glorify Allah, in their daily prayers, five times in a day. The initial Revelation came to prophet Muhammad in a cave of Mount Hira near the city of Mecca. There are several mountains near Mecca. During the annual Islamic Pilgrimage called "Hajj", Muslims from all over the world, assemble in Mecca and shout Glory to the Lord from the top of Mount Arafat. The pilgrims continuously give Glory to Allah on their ways, to and from Mecca.

sa 21:13 The word about Arabia. In the thick woods of Arabia will be your night's resting-place, O traveling bands of Dedanites!
a prophecy about Arabia
Isa 21:14 Give water to him who is in need of water; give bread, O men of the land of Tema, to those in flight.
Tema is a city in Northern Saudi Arabia تيماء . Jews lived there at that time
This is an order from God to those to supply him " Muhammad" with bread & water . we know that he immigrated from Mecca to Almadinah
Isa 21:15 For they are in flight from the sharp sword, and the bent bow, and from the trouble of war.
The reason for the immigration which was ordered by God was to escape from the torture and plot to kill him by Quraish who were the decendants of Qedar
Isa 21:16 For so has the Lord said to me, In a year, by the years of a servant working for payment, all the glory of Kedar will come to an end:
after one year of his immigration a battle erupted between him & Quraish where they got defeated
Isa 21:17 And the rest of the bowmen, the men of war of the children of Kedar, will be small in number: for the Lord, the God of Israel, has said it.

I think the "New Song" was New Testament!

Is the Quran "Another new song"? Like a second new song?
