This should not be underestimated. If we don't have a healthy body, we can't possibly have a healthy brain. Depression is seriously on the rise, and it could be largely a result of the poor diet we eat these days.
Years ago I read a little book by nutritionist Adele Davis that made a connection between depression and B vitamin deficiencies. The Standard American Diet is woefully inadequate when it comes to vitamin B, which is found especially in organ meats and whole grains. Since I read that book, I've tried to make it a point to take B vitamin supplements and eat whole grains regularly. I don't know for sure, but I think this may be why my depression problems have been moderate, while my sister and brother have both had major troubles with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Here's an article on the subject, although it doesn't specifically mention B vitamins:

I am convinced that oatmeal has anti-depressant properties.
We should leave no stone unturned in our efforts to combat this debilitating and discouraging disease!
Take care everyone,
Judy
