## OK:The woman in Rev is a symbol, not an actual woman, so therefore, it's not Mary being refered to in Rev.
Mary gave birth to Christ much like a surrogate mom can give birth to fetus implanted in her, that didn't really come from her. In this case, the surrogate isn't really the child's mom even she birthed the child. Likewis with Mary, who wasn't really Christ's mom, but had Christ put in her by the Holy Spirit, and then gave birth to him.
Shinbits:
- "...Mary, who wasn't really Christ's mom, but had Christ put in her by the Holy Spirit, and then gave birth to him"
St Matthew 1
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
St Matthew 2
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, " take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead." 21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
St.Luke 2
34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
John 2
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4" Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
John 19:25-27
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Acts 1
14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Galatians 4
4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,
Also, of lesser weight, perhaps, because they include info which from other passages is seen to be inaccurate:
Matthew 13
53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked. 55 "Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
Joseph was not in fact his father, even though the speakers thought so. So they could, in principle, be wrong about His Mother too. But the preceding passages suggest they were correct about her.
As for passages such as Matthew 12-46-50:
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." 48He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
Mark 3
31 Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you." 33 "Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. 34Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."
Luke 8
19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."
21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."
Luke 11:27-28 (New International Version)
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
John 6
42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"
- He does not deny she is His mother; but He does "universalise" His Sonship. If she was not His mother, a lot of passages need to be explained, for they say unambiguously that she is His mother. In John 19 He does the same thing, in a different way - by giving His mother to St.John, as his mother. In Luke, He does this by His reply to the woman in the crowd. The CC does not suggest or teach there is a choice between honouring Mary as His Mother, & doing the will of God; for we do not honour her at all, if we do not "[do] as He tells us". It is a funny devotion to her that leads us to disobey her Son, despite her words.
Even in the second set of passages, Mary is called the mother of Jesus, not by the crowd alone, who could in principle be wrong; but by the Evangelists.
There are objections to the Catholic position - for Jesus is said in the texts quoted to have brothers. They could have been his half-brothers - there is more one alternative solution. The same does not hold for his relation to Mary, because the only ways to be a son in first-century Judaea were by being:
- adopted
- fostered
- offspring of a re-married or re-marrying parent
- born of the supposed mother
- How are ideas that deny He was her Son, to be squared with the texts ?
- What reason is there to deny she was what the texts say she was, His mother ?
- How are the consequences of her not being His mother to be dealt with ?
- What is gained by denying He is truly her Son, born of the substance of her body ?
BTW - what does a non-denomational Christian actually believe
