Is this a red flag to you?

I don't think it has to do with forgiveness. It's the elder's position in the church. Personally, I say it is a big red flag and is unacceptable.

It has everything to do with forgiveness. It always has to do with forgiveness.

And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. ‘ But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” (Mark 7:6-8)

It is not up to man to deal with this "elder" it is up to God. The only thing a man can possibly do by interfering is screw things up. Badly. Set aside the man-made precepts and let God deal with the heart.

You are right...
And many are screwing it all up on this thread itself. They are crucifying the poor guy without allowing God to be the judge.
Enough said.

No one wants to crucify anyone. However to hold a church office there need to be qualifications of character.

Every man who has ever held a church office has fallen short.

even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Roman 3:22-24)

And that's kind of the point. People in this thread seem to expect perfection because the man holds a position of elder in the church but no one seems to take into account that even elders (and pastors, and apostles, and prophets, and teachers, and evangelists) have fallen short of the glory of God.

Correct you are.

Yes we have.

I occasionally use a swear word myself ... and it's a habit that I am trying hard to drop. It comes from being in the motorcycle world.

But I NEVER use the Lord's name in vain. I flat out never do that.
Maybe it's just me - but it seems like if you really value God and what He means in your life, you would never want to insult Him.

I don't suggest that you confront or accuse the elder in question.
I just suggest that you PRAY for him.
Pray that God will help him to correct this bad use of language.

Lol...thanks trogool...I think the other things I said should have clued him in that I was agreeing with him. I guess further from the truth meant lying...oops! Even Holy Spirit teaches me correct english:)

Some don't understand that no one is above mistake whether they are ministers or elders. Seriously. Everyone still needs to keep praying to God to purge their tongue and mouth. Isaiah had live hot coals dropped on his tongue to purge it when he was taken to heaven. He knew his mouth was filthy even when God had already called him and appointed him.

At church yesterday one of the " elders" who is respected got up to speak. He teaches classes at the church and is well respected in general. Yesterday he was telling us something from his life about failing a test he studied for and casually said, "jesus christ....". You know when people say"jesus Christ I can't believe it.". Now sometimes I have a foul mouth but saying JC in that manner is something I just dont do. At all. Am I being sensitive?

Well you'd expect more of a Christian leader, to really have their tongue under control by the time they are in a position of authority.

Fact is that sometimes sin comes out of us. This is called indwelling sin, Paul goes into detail about it in Romans 7.

I gotta admit though, when I swear I'm more likely to use a 4-letter F word than Jesus' name like that, I have occasionally done it but I feel absolutely terrible. I feel bad when I swear too, but much worse when I take God's name casually. I find it interesting that your elder would have said that.

If it's an ongoing thing, I would point it out. Right now, I would be suspicious of him and let it go. Is he generally a decent Christian man? Then he may have simply sinned, it happens, he already knows. But if it's an ongoing thing then there may be more cause for concern and I would talk to him about it.

James 1:26

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

It's really important to get a grip on your speech.

This is not an ongoing thing. The OP said it only happened once.
