It doesn't sound like a safe or edifying place to be.

If you brand every place where a well-respected elder messes up a single time, you will literally find yourself not leaving home.

Let's keep this in perspective: the elder in question isn't a hooligan dropping f-bombs every other sentence, the church probably didn't approve, and they aren't killing puppies in there. All that happened was he slipped up when remembering a past event that was very frustrating. Once.

You and i disagree. 'nuff said.

Peace.

If you seriously consider a single isolated incident in which an elderly, well-respected elder is mildly vulgar to be a disqualifier per those verses, yes, we certainly do. I don't read those verses as saying that bishops need to be literally perfect.

At church yesterday one of the " elders" who is respected got up to speak. He teaches classes at the church and is well respected in general. Yesterday he was telling us something from his life about failing a test he studied for and casually said, "jesus christ....". You know when people say"jesus Christ I can't believe it.". Now sometimes I have a foul mouth but saying JC in that manner is something I just dont do. At all. Am I being sensitive?

During the actual church service the elder slipped and said it?

If it EVER happened at my church, I'd expect my pastor to deal with it...and I KNOW that mine would. Hopefully your pastor took the elder aside and let him know that during a worship service it's not appropriate to say something like that. Not at all.

why are some people acting like its the end of the world. Wow...I'm sure The Lord forgives this poor man.
So what if he made a mistake...oh I guess none of us has ever made a slip of words before. If the OP said this elder does it constantly, then its a different issue, but she mentioned this was something he did that she was surprised about.
Not an edifying place to be????
Lord have mercy on us all then.

I don't think it has to do with forgiveness. It's the elder's position in the church. Personally, I say it is a big red flag.

I'd take this a lot more seriously if I wasn't fairly positive you had taken the Lord's name in vain at some point in your life. Man, watching all of you making mountains out of molehills is hilarious!

That is absolutely not true. Where do you come up with this?

Your attempt to deflect the point that you do the exact same thing this pastor did once. I do hope you've disqualified yourself from any ministry position, as your behavior is a big red flag and unacceptable.
