Is metal secular by default?

Just wondering because I didn't see any hard rock or metal forums, so I figured that discussion of those genres must go here.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of folk metal, especially mitellalter. I think that the combination of folk instruments with the energy, complexity and fullness of sound that one gets with metal is the best music ever and anyone who says otherwise ought to be beaten with big foam weapons until they agree with me.

Discuss.

absolutely not!

-underoath
-killswitch engage (more so when Jesse Leach was the lead singer)
-disciple started out as a metal band as well. i used to go to their shows before they were mainstream.
-flyleaf
-demon hunter
-as i lay dying
-haste the day
-decyfer down (softer alternative metal)
-the devil wears prada
-falling up
-skillet
-red

these are all Christian metal bands that i LOVE!
metal is my favorite genre and i enjoy all subgenres of it.

I can't say I like ALL subgenres of metal. I can deal with death growling but I don't like screaming enough to be a fan of the genres based upon it. Still, I do like all of those bands you listed enough to own their albums.

...Er, that is, I would own their albums if I had the money to spend on new CDs. >.>

oh and Kill Switch Engage isn't a Christian band, but they are still good.

the band itself was not a Christian band i suppose, however Jesse (when he was the lead singer) was a Christian and wrote quite a few songs about his faith. either way...they rock. :)

No, you can post about it in the CCM area, I guess maybe the idea that Christian metal tends not to be referred to as 'CCM' went past the discussion when the areas were being named.

But I don't really care about specifics; we get plenty of discussion of Christian bands in here anyway, and most of the hard rock/metal acts do have some amount of crossover appeal.

A few of my go-tos:
The Awakening
Autumn's Descent
Klank
Circle of Dust
Aleixa
Torn Skin

...and some others, but I'm not really in the mood to continue listing them off.

I listened to those 2 videos, well..........

Personally, I don't like today's metal, the vocals sound like the lead singer can't sing so they reverted to a 'hardcore' screamer type sound instead of actually singing. And, it's hard to believe that those sounds lead to spirituality.

This has been my point concerning music in my posts on this subject, just because a music group has been put into the 'christian music' genre does not automatically mean it is wholesome sounding. I really can't tell the difference, honestly, between christian hardcore and metal and non-christian - like I said, I just don't like the sound. But that is my choice, I will not say it is wrong, just that I don't like it.

I grew up on 80's hair bands, etc., so those are the kind of sounds I like - big arena rock sounds, with big guitar solos, etc., but I am old school, so there you go.

On that same note, though, I find plenty of 'non-christian' music uplifting and can teach me about people outside the church, and I really like the sound. I am not going to make music choices based on canned 'genres', no, I listen to all kinds of music, it is my favorite artform, the emotions conveyed in current music are often a reflection of the pysches of lost people, these are the people I am most interested in, my journey toward becoming a moderate includes understanding the world, I don't think that makes me better, maybe it makes me lesser, but it is the journey that I am currently on.

And, it's hard to believe that those sounds lead to spirituality.
Musical genre is typically something you become accustomed to over a long period of time. "Spirituality" is a quality born of inner transformation. So, for example, if I have a lot of angst in my life and listening to heavy metal or hard rock helps me understand or make sense of it in a way that ultimately helps me become a better person, then certainly it would be correct to say that those sounds (or lyrics, in many cases) can lead to spirituality.

Of course, for many other people, perhaps yourself included, they can be harmful, very much like how a radio song glorifying romantic love can be harmful to naive listeners.

This has been my point concerning music in my posts on this subject, just because a music group has been put into the 'christian music' genre does not automatically mean it is wholesome sounding.
"Wholesome" is a long, long way away from "spiritual." There are many stories in the Bible that aren't wholesome. However, they are real, and they deal openly with real evil and real pain. These topics can be presented in a very raw or "unwholesome" manner, yet still lead those with "ears" to a greater level of spirituality.

On that same note, though, I find plenty of 'non-christian' music uplifting and can teach me about people outside the church, and I really like the sound.
Exactly.

And the sooner you realize that you, like them, are "lost," the sooner you will be able to understand their angst, and learn from it, not just as part of an ongoing study of others, but as part of studying yourself.

Deftones, Queens of the Stone Age: my two favorites. Not Christian :)
The Blood Brothers, Baroness, Isis, Sun O))): new interests.

In high school I used to be a Skillet fan, but after a fuller experience of metal I don't find them particularly innovative or interesting any more.

I love many different subgenres of metal. Some of my favourites are symphonic metal, gothic metal, melodical metal, death metal and power metal. The only type of metal I'm not so fond of is black metal, but I'd still prefer to listen to it over rap or hip-hop.

My all-time favourite metal band is Nightwish, with Children of Bodom close behind. I'm so excited because I'm going to a concert with a few of my friends in less than two weeks, and the bands that will be performing are Sonata Arctica, Mutiny Within and Powerglove. I can't wait! :D

check out the band Trenches if you are looking for some Christian metal that is different from the average sceney bopper metalcore stuff that is so popular right now, they are more in the vein of post-metal/sludge and they CRUSH FACES.

Neurosis
Irreversible
Year Of No Light
Jakob
Red Sparowes
and the aforementioned Trenches, the only Christian post-metal band i know of....

Sunn 0))) is fantastic too! i dont know of any Christian drone bands, but the guitar player in the worship team at my church busted out some drone riffs during communion, and it absolutely crushed me, i was openly weeping and entirely filled with the Holy Spirit.
