You are good at asking these deep questions, this here gets into the territory of if it offends your brother, if you think it itself means anything area.

To me personally, they are no more than a bunch of beads on a string with a cross, silly little trinket. To someone of the Catholic persuasion, or Catholic offshoots, to many unchurched people of the world thanks to the press the Catholics receive they mean a great deal.

Now disclaimer, this is the opinion of Joshua D. Crissen : I personally would not carry them because of what they represent, not that they mean anything as they do not, but they represent a great deal. They will link you to the catholic church in the eyes of many who see them, and it also will endorse the worship of Mary, which is blasphemy.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread:

Hello brother,I have a question as well.

What is the purpose of the rosary?

the name rosary can be used for two things

one thing is a necklace with beads or knots on it and a crucifix

the other is a set of prayers and meditations, you use the beads to keep track of where you are at in the prayers.

Thank you!

It is a lack of knowledge that creates presumption.

Needing the rosary for your faith is like saying you need a wedding ring to be married. A wedding ring shows you are married and is a symbol of that marriage and we don't need to show our faith by such meaningless gestures.

Your right, same thing with a marriage license to be married.
It was developed at the turn of the century to determine if people of color were married to caucasian people.

It joins Christians into a covenant with a State government,as well as their spouse.
Just as building permits insure a structure code, the marriage license allows the state to allow
or void a marriage.
It places the State in a position where we allow the un Godly to usurp authority over
The body of Christ.

Off topic.

On the Rosary based on my new found knowledge,I would say as long as a person does not believe it gives credence to the validity of their prayer life,it is a matter of the individuals
Faith.
Reference Romans 14.

I think there is freedom for the Christian to do all kinds of things but see no wisdom in carrying a rosary. When it comes to faith, practice, worship, etc. it would be more of a crutch and hinder true abiding faith in Christ alone. In fact, you should consider why this element often associated with Romanism is so powerful to you, it is more often viewed as a stumbling block to true faith and repentance by Baptists. Why not carry a mala or amulet instead...they are no more effective than a rosary.

Yours in The Lord,

jm

I am a Baptist, of course, and sometimes I carry a rosary with me to remind me of God's grace and protection. Is that sinful in itself since many have opposing beliefs about the Catholic Church?

Why would you carry something that symbolizes pagan beliefs to remind you of God?

Why not memorize scripture so that you have God's Word to remind you of God?

Praying the rosary is not a Baptist belief. Part of the practice is saying Hail Marys and the Fatima prayer and it ends with:
How to Pray the Rosary
HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! .....

It just isn't in compliance with Baptist belief to pray to Mary or say Hail Mary or the pray the Fatima prayer. Promotion of it in this particular forum would be a violation of the rules.

I don't think it is wrong for a person of any faith to carry a rosary.

I am sorry if I overstepped my bounds
I did not encourage praying the rosary in the Baptist subforum

as stated earlier the term "rosary" can refer to the set of prayers and meditations

or the term "rosary" can mean the physical chaplet that looks like a necklace with beads or knots with a Crucifix on it.

while the set of prayers might go against the Baptist faith
the physical chaplet with a crucifix on it is not intrinsically against the Baptist faith

or do I misunderstand the rules?

You misunderstand the Christian Faith as practiced by the Baptist Church. Christ is not like the Catholic Cross depiction. He is not on that ugly cross but has risen from the grave they placed Him in and is seated at the Father's right hand, He is alive!

The Rosary is not intricately evil but neither is it intricately holy, the beads nor the prayers. It is, however used by the Islamists and I touch no parts of Islam. I have several Fundamentalist Catholic friends and none of us hold to the Rosary, jewelery nor prayer set. They, like I speak to the Father, directly, the same way Martin Luther did.
