I agree. But we do tend to tip toe through the tulips.I would say that if a person allows God's Holy Spirit to live within them, then the thought of harming another would not exist.
I'm a little confused by the above. The ETERNAL laws of God are to "Love God with all your mind, heart and strength, and Love your neighbor as yourself." Period.
Based on these ETERNAL laws the first covenant was made with Israel - The Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28.
But then comes Jesus...Who is our Sabbath Rest. Whereby we keep Jesus and not merely a day.
He said:
John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
The commandments of Jesus are all based on the heart, and not just willpower.
The New Covenant Commandments are also based on the ETERNAL laws of God. And see how Jesus encompasses the first four of the Ten Commandments.
1 John 3:23
"23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
The only way to keep these laws of the heart is by the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The "grace" of God is the power of God abiding in us to keep Gods eternal laws through us.
The Ten Commandments, except for coveting, were all "bottom-line" commandments such as against murder, although you could still hate and not commit the sin. In other words, you could still have iniquity in your heart but remain "not guilty" of sin. Jesus came to remove the iniquity buried deep within us, before it ever rose to the top to commit sin! "To whom the Son makes free, is free indeed."
Here is an example. Look how far it is before a mere temptation becomes sin. James 1:14-15 "14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death."
We are required to obey Jesus' commands not the Mosaic Law. We are just as Abraham was. Without the Law.I agree. But we do tend to tip toe through the tulips.
Why oh why is it so difficult to say:
We are required to obey the commandments (moral) of God...
??
Oh my gosh.I find myself not agreeing with even one sentence of this post, and if you are going to claim such things, where is your scriptural foundation? I'm scratching my head...
Agreed as to the above...but aren't you showing how your first statement was wrong? We DO have to embelish if we're to keep the commandments of Jesus, don't we?Jesus said that lustful thoughts were adultery in your mind and that hate was like murder so if you hate and lust then you break new forms of the old commandments but these are new laws, or at least extensions of the old laws. This is what the gospel according to Matthew says:
Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to annul the law and the prophets. I have not come to annul them, but to fulfil them. 18 I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smallest letter or dot in the law will change, until all is fulfilled. 19 So then, whoever breaks the least important of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them, and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 I tell you, if your sense of right and wrong is not keener than that of the Lawyers and the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 You have heard, that it was said to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who murders will have to face trial. 22 But now, I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister is liable, to be brought before the council. Whoever calls a brother or sister “Fool!” is liable, of being thrown into the fire of hell. 23 So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar, and you remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there, in front of the altar; go at once, and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God. 25 Don’t forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. 26 There, you will stay, until you have paid the last penny.
27 You have heard that it was said: Do not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you this: anyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent, has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 So, if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body, than to have your whole body thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better for you to lose a part of your body, than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
1. What is the Mosaic Law?We are required to obey Jesus' commands not the Mosaic Law. We are just as Abraham was. Without the Law.
How do you make number 8 better now?Exodus 20: 3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. This is first because we can not follow the others if we have little gods.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
We have been terrible with this one
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. This maybe the easiest...
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. We have made a hash out of this one , I am trying to be better than my upbringing in this one.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. We all come and go on this one depending on our parents ...
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Hopefully most of us follow these...
But Jesus explains until we love God with all our hearts we will break them ... That means we have to hate the world and that is hard , good thread thanks
The Mosaic Law is all of the laws which God placed on the Jewish people.1. What is the Mosaic Law?
It wasn't. Jews are under the restrictions of that law.2. When was it abolished?
Every law which God gave Moses or those which came after him, that the Jewish people were to obey. What do you mean when you speak of the Mosaic Law?
The 10 are amongst the 613.The 10 commandments or the 613?
How do you make number 8 better now?
The Mosaic law, "Thou shall not kill," was not abolished.1. What is the Mosaic Law?
2. When was it abolished?
What do you mean when you speak of the Mosaic Law?
The 10 commandments or the 613?
I do agree with the above.
The Sabbath commandment has always confused me, however.
It IS one of the 10 commandments which God specifically gave to us who believe in God, but it's a ceremonial law and the ceremonial law has been abolished...
Oh my gosh.
You need verses for the above.??
It's all straight out of the N.T.
Here is what @PaulCyp1 posted:
It is not possible to be perfect, which means each of us will do some things wrong, some things sinful. Paul was teaching about the goal we are to pursue, but in another place he says that he himself often falls short of the mark. Which is why repentance is a lifelong process, not a one time event.
1 John 1:8-9 doing wrong
Philippians 3:14 goals to pursue
1 Corinthians 9:27 Paul being disqualified
1 John 1:8-9 asking forgiveness
It is impossible. But it is Himpossible. Is it possible or not to keep the 10 commandments?
If it's not possible to keep the commandments, why do Jesus and also Paul say we are to keep the commandments?
John 14:15
"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."
John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
Matthew 5:19
Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 19:17
And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
1 Corinthians 7:19
Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.
1 Timothy 6
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
"And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day." John 6:39And what is the will of God for His most important creation?
Agreed as to the above...but aren't you showing how your first statement was wrong? We DO have to embelish if we're to keep the commandments of Jesus, don't we?
As to stealing. It IS more complicated that just not stealing a book from somewhere.
We could steal someone's time unfairly.
We could steal the reputation of a friend or neighbor.
So, yes, we do have to fancy up our theology a little bit!
So you're saying, as a Catholic, that we are not required to follow the 10 commandments???The Mosaic Law is all of the laws which God placed on the Jewish people.
It wasn't. Jews are under the restrictions of that law.
Every law which God gave Moses or those which came after him, that the Jewish people were to obey.
The 10 are amongst the 613.
I don't understand the above and it doesn't matter.I don't know what type a person he was speaking of, but John is clear about a Christian.
1 John 3:5-9
5 "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God."
Just how many times must we repent from all sin and are cleansed and given the Holy Spirit who does not lead us into any future willful sin???
And I'm sorry but 1 John 1:8-9 is about a nonChristian becoming a Christian. It is not a constant repeat of sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent forever!
Maybe this is why he didn't include scripture because there aren't any that are not misinterpreted. Beware of the false doctrines out there.
"And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day." John 6:39
