And watching porn isn't a sin either, only starring in porn ;)

Actually, I listen to a lot of secular music. If you like jazz and/or music with good instrumentation, you've got to. Phil Keaggy stopped being considered a world-class guitarist years ago...most of what's happening right now in terms of cutting-edge musicianship is taking place with musicians that may be Christin but whose emphasis is on instrumentals rather than words.

When's the last time you heard anything REALLY original in Christian rock? For me, that answer iis Bruce Cockburn, and that was in the mid '90s.

Well, it really depends on what kind of secular music you listen to... If it promotes suicide and so on, then obviously, it's not something you should really dig into... On the other hand, there are plenty of inspiring secular music out there, one's that promote love and peace, freedom and happiness... You get my drift? =)

Ahhh? Double post?
Yah she posted twice...

It's Not what goes into you that makes you unclean it is what comes out.
Weeeell this is the $64 question... is it the chicken or the egg... on this issue I think that yes, your fruit is the key... but having said that, God looks at the heart, and fruit is only fruit based on the kind of heart it comes from...

"out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks..." Matt 12:34
"Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man." - Matt 15:17

Now these things which come from the HEART defile a man, and the things we watch and listen to influence the behaviour of the heart... if we fill our minds with bad stuff, what do you think will come from the heart?! Evil! Why do you think Paul says in Philippians 4 that "whatever things are noble... just... pure... lovely... excellent... praiseworthy... MEDIATE ON THESE THINGS!!!" And I have to tell you it's hard to think of such things when our minds are filling up with junk, messages and images the world sells. No I don't think it's sinful to listen to secular music... I do. But in the same breath I say that many secular songs aren't going to edify you or build your character or faith either. Be vigilent with what goes into your mind and heart. God bless you all

I used to have a system where everytime I bought a new CD by a Christian band, I would throw out a secular CD from my collection, but that's just because I had quite a few CDs with swear words in the lyrics, and I thought they were influencing my language. Now I don't swear any more, and I have an ace CD collection  But I still listen to my Dire Straits, Clapton, Badly Drawn Boy, Queen etc. and I don't consider that a sin. They give me a standard to aim for in my guitar playing.

I overhead a guy at the music store tonight comment to someone else, "you know, Christian music has gotten SOOOO MUCH BETTER..."

I'm also of the opinion that listening to secular music is not in and of itself sinful; however, that said, I find that the deeper I go with my relationship with my Lord, the less I desire to actively listen to secular music. I played Rock, R&B, Blues & Swing professionally for about 12 years. Now I just play at church.

Funny, I remember saying this about a former drummer, "..whenever we have a freebie gig, someone in {his} family always dies and he can't do the gig...he won't leave the house for less than a C-note, now he only plays for Jesus, and doesn't care if he gets paid or not!"

Here I a couple of years ago. I understand. Forgive me Jesus!

Nothing wrong with secular music. It's all a question of personal decision and choice. There are some types of music I wouldn't listen to on moral and religious grounds (eg eminem) and some because they are c**p (eg eminem).

If the music supports things that are contrary to your faith as a Christian, then give it a miss. More than that, campaign against it. It's not that much different from refusing to look at porn because of our belief's.
