i love old school rap and r&b with some blus. they talk about all kinds of things but im wise enough not to smoke weed or be in a gang becuase they mention it. can i still listen to it? i mean this stuff helps relaxes me and i just LOVE music and i play bass, keyboard and guitar, the music helps me in improving myself as a instrument player. what do you guys think?

There is nothing wrong with non-christian music. A good rule of thumb is to listen to the lyrics and see if it goes against Christ or is blatently negative ( I.E. "i want to die, and kill, and rape") that sort of thing. I listen to Christian rock because it always seems to have a way of making me feel better, but there are some secular songs i like too. G.B.

Have you considered merging topics that are similar in topic into one so we don't have 500 topics of people asking the same questions?

CJ
My personal opinion is that a merge is the best thing to do when the topics are going on at the same time in 2 or more threads.
But this question, "Can a Christian listen to secular music and still be a good Christian?" is a real question, and people are looking for real answers. I know that if I had that quesiton, I'd rather discuss it with people than read a thread from a month or two ago. Some people are like that. Others will read through threads from last year and get benefit from it. People are different.

When the Bible says we are to be "in the world but not of the world" music does come to mind. I think this is an important issue for Christians. And its good to talk it out. Thats why I do not mind the same topic coming up every month or so. If you do not like it you can ignore it, you can even have a prepared reply to certain topics if you want, but the existence of a thread like this is valuable to those who are new here.

That said, I do not moderate this forum so I couldn't merge the threads anyway. :)

Now I'm going to answer a question with a question. Does it cause you to stumble? And does it glorify God? Ask yourself that in no matter what you do. Then you will know if it's ok to listen to
I hope that helped
Blessings in Christ
1 Corinthians 6:12-20
12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee immorality. 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 8:1-13
1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. 2 If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. 7 However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8 But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. 9 But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. 12 And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble

Secular music is the devil! Have you ever heard Barry Manilow?
OOOOOO I might have expected that from you... now here's your retribution...

"You know I can't smile without you..."

...

"O Mandy, you came and you gave without taking..."

...

"I write the songs that make the young girls cry..."

...

"Her name was Lola..."

Ok, SATAN, you may think you can tempt me with your guilty pleasure tactics but I will not be shaken. (stirred maybe)

By the way let me stipulate i am NOT a BARRY MANILOW fan, except for the "I can't smile" song, I think he isn't crash hot

(LivingWorship nervously ducks into his hideyhole in anticipation of the universal chorus of "YEAH SURE!!")

Honestly all jokes aside, not a fan, just poking fun a Muzikdude ;)
