  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Suppose Ignatius from his pocket took out a coin which he knew was a fair coin. He tossed it 40 times - he got 18 heads and 22 tails.
Remember - it's a fair coin, not a trick coin, there is nothing unusual with
it. All is fine with the result.

Now Ignatius got another coin, we don't know whether this one is
a fair coin or not. It has not been disclosed whether it's a fair coin or not.

Now we are going to find out more about it. This time Ignatius tossed it 40000 times. What did he get ? He got 18000 heads and 22000 tails.

Paul said: "The result tells me it can't be a fair coin."
John said "There's nothing unusual about the result. It's a fair coin."
While Mary said: "There's no definite answer because it's basically unpredictable.
How could coin tosses be predictable ?"

Whom do you agree with ?

Certainly it's possible. That's what's the riddle is asking you: whether it's a fair coin or not ??

Now the answer: Paul is correct, because it is not a fair coin. This answer is supported by a mathematical law - the Law of Large Numbers.

Can we be so certain ? Yes - if the Law of Large Numbers is not trustworthy, then the insurance industry wouldn't have survived. The same goes for the casinos.

The world is more amazing and complex than we think.

Yep, there's a reason investors diversify their portfolios.
