The word "Jew" comes from the tribe of Judah and also the Kingdom of Judah. By the time of the Exile it described any Israelite regardless of tribe. Thus "The Jews" is a sufficiently adequate term to use as a synonym for ancient Israel.

You seem to be forgetting that both Israel AND Judah were taken in to Assyrian Captivity.
How can it be used as a synonym if Judah was taken with Israel into Assyrian captitiviy and did not return?What happened to them?How can it be used for a people who did not return to their place?
