  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I notice some people feel that someone once involved in the occult might be holding onto something from their past if they practice astral projection as a Christian. The fact is however, that there are many things that can be done in the occult that are done in Christianity. Healing would be a better example. If a person was a "Satanic healer" then became a Christian, does that mean they should give up healing?

I don't think so. I believe God gives "gifts" to people and people individually choose how they use those abilities. God is the one who created us spiritual beings who are naturally capable of out of body experiences. OBE/astral projection is a worldwide phenomenon in all religions. It's part of our physiospiritual makeup. It all depends HOW a person uses it.
If someone uses astral projection to spy on someone, like to get their ATM pin number, or watch someone in their private affairs, or for other selfish & greedy reasons, then I'd say it isn't right for ANYONE to do.
But if people use astral projection to gain spiritual knowledge and to excercise their spiritual abilities, there is no wrong in it.

Now what WAS that number I saw at the late night ATM last night when I had an OBE in a dream? ;) (Only kidding - I wouldn't exploit it even if I did see such a thing.)
Just don't project to military bases where they are developing secret experimental technology - people have gotten in trouble doing that, and the government even has "astral agents" who will warn you to stop immediately! Seriously, I haven't done this but I know someone who did and I saw the consequences of their actions. So if you use astral projection sneakily to spy on people, remember, you're not the only one capable of astral travel. Someone might see you astrally spying on someone else. I know to some this sounds like science fiction, but I've been around it too much and seen that it's very real.

Just use the ability in harmony with Gods will and you're safe.

Sorry, interesting topic, but I guess the point is it depends on if it is God's will or not. What some believe is astral projection is called being in the spirit in the Bible. I believe it means God was allowing these people to see what these other people were doing for the good of all. God allows people to see things of the future some times when it is a chance for the people to repent from wickedness. Most prophets of the Bible foretold coming disasters to come because of punishment from the Lord, chances to repent, or the coming messiah. They also went to the man of God (prophets) to find out God's will and ask for guidance in the hopes God would answer them. God also grants one at times to know others intentions (usually when they're bad) in order for his word to be spoken through them to repent--or if they are good, (ex Anna) the prophets knew the messiah was going to be born of Mary. Dreams also could be used as a prophetic vision. There is also a gift called distinguishing of spirits so that you know what is from God or not. So it reasons visitation in the spirit can be God's will as well.
However, this does not make those who call themselves psychics appropriate. For example, they rely on spirits instead of God for his will. Some pray to spirits or Gods other than God. Some I think don't care about any god. God's will must be done through God and God alone. It is said God works in mysterious ways and we won't understand. However those relying on spirits or gods other than God are generally not on the right path to Christianity to sum upwhat I'm trying to say. I'm not trying to project hatred, but I am trying to rerason things out by what the Bible tells me. The Christians and Jews believed in a God different from all the pagan nations. Amd that is all I can say.

How about adding a category--Unsure. Oh, well. I actually didn't answer the poll. I am not sure that astral projection is the same thing as being in the spirit. Also, maybe God allowed Paul to be with them in spirit and it wasn't his own will. This complicates things more.

I certainly know it can happen. However, I think it's really God's decision to do it for you. I can't stand people who are really into "spiritual warfare" and see demons and Satan everywhere, but I have to agree that practicing astral projection is a bad idea. I really think you could make yourself susceptible to demonic influence, since your body is left unguarded. If God chooses to take a person's spirit from their body for a certain amount of time, He's got His reasons, and He'll make sure you're protected.

Everyone craves fantastic experiences beyond the world we live in now. After all, we were made for Eden, and earth is certainly no Eden anymore. Christianity should be more then a thrill ride. However, if you really desire a meaningful experience, try praying for God to show Himself to you. I'd love to see Jesus face to face while still alive, but I guess that's hoping a lot, hmm?

Yep...yep.... I sound just like those people I can't stand to read....;)

Astral projection is an extremely important thing, but it can also be very dangerous given it's nature Astral projection is basically lucid dreaming/meditation in which one controls the dream and is conscious. The general idea is that this is a very powerful tool if one has destroyed their ego/seeks to gain spiritual knowledge/meditate/etc. It's destructive powers would be if it falls in the hands of the ego. For example if it's used to fufill lustfull desires, such as sex. There is a present dange that people can prefer this world to the real world, which can be a very destructive thing. When used properly astral projection is an essential and extremly powerful tool for spiritual progression.

Stormy,
Am I the only one who has had this happened and had a feeling of fear? I am afraid that I will not return to my body. I sure wouldn't do it for fun.

No. The first time it happened to me it was spontaneous. In fact it felt like hands were lifting me out of the bed and up towards the ceiling. I was yelling at them to "put me down" Then I rolled over and saw my own body lying on the bed and the shock of seeing that sent me snapping back into it with a jolt. That's when I didn't know what it was. I could say it scared me because I've read when you get scared you'll snap back. The ones I've had since then were either initiated by God, or when I became aware of them I knew it was in order to learn things so I was able to go much further. Much much further!

Tigerfu,
In Ecclesiastes 12:6 they talk about death(i think) and how the silver cord can be cut, i think theyre talking about the umbilical cord that attaches you to your physical body when you astral project, cause they say when you die, the cord is cut, and that is the only way it can be cut, or so ive heard.

Right. Some people say they can see a silvery cord between their spirit body & their physical body when they astral project. It attaches near the solarplexus or heart area. Even occult books have mentioned that if the cord is severed that's when the physical body will die. Solomon seemed to know this was true as well. I personally have never actually seen it, but I did feel it one time - it seemed like that's where I got pulled back from.

Self Hypnosis, is Astral Projection any thing other than self hypnosis?

It depends. I'm sure you could put yourself in a hypnotic state, but what about when God causes the event, or if you are just relaxing and expereience it?

Hypnosis involves the mind being prone to suggestablility. That doesn't necessarily happen during astral projection.

I'm not sure of the appropriateness of having an OBE, at least on purpose. God has taken many a prophet out of their body for His will. But if you were to leave your body, is it really left unguarded? We are Christians, after accepting the gift of Christ's blood, that was shed for us, and accepting Christ Jesus as Lord, we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God the Spirit is dwelling in you, let me repeat that, God Himself, is dwelling in you. Is that really leaving your body empty? Having dabbled in the occult before giving my life to Jesus, I'm a little leary about dealing with supernatural things. I think that has cut me off from many spiritual opportunities. Is astral travel a gift or a perversion of a Godly gift? I'm not sure...

I'd like to say, from a non-christian standpoint, that astral projection is neither right nor wrong but merely another ability human beings have. I like to think of it this way: if I can practice and become a really good cook then I have enhanced that ability. If practice running constantly I'd become a really good runner going faster and farther all the time. Because of my experience with astral projection (studying it and practicing it to a lesser degree) I'd like to break my rule and say that I don't beleive there's anything right or wrong about it. As with any ability it's what you do with it that counts.

Astral Projection, astral travel, Out Of Body Experiences,, it goes by many names. It has happened twice that I know of in the bible, Paul experienced it (2nd Corinthians 12:1 thru 4) and Moses did. Moses also experienced it, (passage unknown, i did see it once before.)

Astral travel is, in essence, when your spirit temporarily leaves your body and you travel into the physical or spirit world.

So is something like this alright, if it is mentioned in the bible?
(Under the assumpption it exists)

There is a difference in my opinion between being taken somewhere in the spirit and astral travel. Even if the mechanics are the same, it seems to me to be different if God initiates it vs. a person dabbling in the occult. I experimented with this for a while and had a personal experience that more or less confirmed this, at least for me.

Heh, and then on top of it all, some might think it nothing more than a dream so...

Ultimately, I think relying on spiritual practices other than God and prayer is off the mark.

If good was done by a non-beleiver during astral travel, would you still consider it off the mark?

Any action someone takes might have unintended consequences. Only if God does something, can one be secure in knowing it was perfect. Why not leave the work to the experts?
