Thousands of Iranian protesters hit streets condemning leaders over downed plane - CNN

Apparently the regime's boost in popularity was short lived after admitting to shooting down that airplane

Apologies from Iranian leaders over the downing of an airliner last week have done little to quell mass anti-government protestsspreading across the country.

Thousands of demonstrators hit the streets this weekend condemning Iranian authorities for shooting a Ukrainian passenger plane and killing all 176 people on board.

And...

Demonstrators are calling for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down and for those responsible for downing the plane to be prosecuted.

"Khamenei have shame. Leave the country
," chanted protesters in the capital, Tehran, in footage posted on social media
.

Thoughts?

The Iranian people, in general, seem to be better than their government. Granted, that's not a very high standard to prove oneself better than, but it is a reason to have hope for the country's future.

And I agree with them on this one. Someone must be held responsible for shooting down a passenger plane. In no sense was Iran at war with Ukraine.

I do think the regime should recompensate the family’s of the deceased, even though it was obviously not intentional. I myself have a great love for the Iranians as people and the Iranian culture, I do support the Iranians intervening in Iraq and Syria, and Yemen, in Lebanon not so much. But I do think standing behind it protects the Christian community in the Arab world.

Iran's been primed for a revolution for some time now... IMO, it might have happened by now if not for several reasons, many of which involve the U.S... but that's another matter.

Their population is, on the average, relatively young and doesn't share their government's hatred towards all things Western, which puts them at odds with the older government, who still remembers the "good old days" when "Death to America" was more than a soundbyte.

If the government tries to crack down on these protests, it might just light the fuse...

Interestingly enough, large American and Israeli flags were laid in the path of protestors near a university. The video shows that not only did almost none of the protestors walk on the flags, but the few who did were chastised by the others.

It would be cool if these were the people to take over the leadership of Iran and then they managed to become allies with the USA and Israel. It would be a very nice change!

That is heartening.

America shouldn't get too excited. The last "democratic revolutions" in Egypt and Syria did not turn out so well. As our friend Al Masihi points out, Americans simply don't do a very good job understanding that part of the world.

Not just that part! We didn't understand the mentality in China or Japan or Viet Nam either. In the War of 1812 the USA didn't understand the mentality of Canadians either.
