Obama brought the Iraq War to an end. Other than a few troops on the embassy compound, we're out of there. We win. What's the problem? Do you think we should have stayed longer?

I see Catholic Republicans voting the way they do because they believe the world becomes a better place when there are laws criminalizing certain sorts of behavior, the more the better (except for white collar crime, of course), because if people would just act like they did in the 1950's the world would be a better place. I consider that simplistic and altogether unrealistic.

I always ask tell them when they advocate going back to the 1950s that they should at least be consistent and re-institute that 91% upper bracket income tax. ;) Interestingly, we're told going back to the 39% Clinton era rate would harm our economy, but we seemed to do just fine (economically speaking) at 91% in the 50s.

That's what leftism basically boils down to. The white male is a putrid monster that must be slaughtered or opressed.

How do you explain all the white male liberals then? Do we all secretly hate ourselves?

Without men (of any race) in the world you wouldn't have half of the things that makes this world worth anything.

Obviously the same applies to women.

The Republican Party's preponderance of white males and dearth of diversity doesn't say anything about white males. It does say something about the Republican Party, whose message obviously isn't inclusive or compelling enough to "the rest of the country" to encourage diversity.

But to the original point, why do you suppose those folks who claim a close following to church teaching tend to vote Republican?

Ding, ding, ding! Because priests don't preach enough about the preferential option for the poor?

But political strength doesn't necessarily mean political unity. Today's Catholic vote is divided by intensity of faith. According to Gallup, the "very religious" lean toward Romney and the "nonreligious" prefer Obama, by significant margins.

That is telling.

Obama followed George Bush's schedule almost to the day.

But to the original point, why do you suppose those folks who claim a close following to church teaching tend to vote Republican?

Common sense? Good judgement? A willingness to practice financial responsibility? All of the above?

Ding, ding, ding! Because priests don't preach enough about the preferential option for the poor?

What exactly is the preferential option for the poor?

They are not regular troops, they work for private companies or freelance. That's obvious.

What isn't obvious - at lest for you - is that you believe they're not getting a dime from the government.

How about Afghanistan? Another 2 years before we "leave," and who knows who else will be employed there, for a war that will have lasted 13 years.

Stop making statements that are not true. The mercenaries are paid by one government or another and by private firms too when they are guarding private wealth and industry. I made no statement to imply that they were never paid by governments.

So, are you saying then that more homily time on support for the poor made possible by a lessening of time spent on pro-life issues?
Or less time reading Bishop's letters against civil laws for same sex marriage.

Maybe if you stopped dodging my inquiries....

The mercenaries are paid by one government or another and by private firms too when they are guarding private wealth and industry.

On January 1, 2012, the State Department will command a hired army of about 5,500 security contractors, all to protect the largest U.S. diplomatic presence anywhere overseas....

You can also expect that there will be a shadow presence by the CIA, and possibly the Joint Special Operations Command, to hunt persons affiliated with al-Qaida.

If you continued reading, you'd see as to why Obama really pulled troops out of Iraq.

Exactly, that was stated by your other interlocutor; they are there to guard the USA diplomatic mission.
