I do not know why hypnosis wouldn't be a Christian thing to do. I can't think of any verses that would prohibit it. It's mostly meditation that relaxes the nerves and the mind, and it can be very beneficial. I taught myself to self-hypnotize through a book, but I don't know of any tapes or CD's that work well. For some people, CD's that are just rain or rainstorms help. I've been a chronic insomniac since age 4, so I can sympathize with you.

Here's what I do:
Lie in bed on your back, making sure that you are comfortable, but that none of your arms or legs are crossed in either way. I do this without a pillow, as I find that the pillow doesn't align my neck properly.
Inhale deeply counting up to 10 in your mind, and then exhale counting down from 10 to 1. Let a natural rhythm take over and continue to do this for a few minutes until you feel your body relax a bit. Make sure to think about nothing else except your breathing, and this becomes easier.
Once you are focused on your breathing and nothing else, try to tense up every muscle in your body slowly counting to ten, and then counting down from ten slowly let it relax. Let every muscle and every nerve relax and open.
Then, beginning at your toes, tense up your toes and feet and hold this for a few seconds, then release them. Keep your focus. Don't let your mind wander. Don't think about anything but what you are doing right this moment. Next tense up your calves and knees holding it for a few seconds, and then relax. Move up your legs to your thighs, and tense it up, thinking about getting deep to every nerve, muscle and tendon all the way to the bone, and then releasing it.
Reaching your lower abdomen, tense up the muscles and hold for a few seconds before releasing them. Then work your stomach and ribcage, tightening them and holding it, then releasing as you breathe out.
Tense up your shoulders, and hold. Release and let the tension in them just slip away into your mattress. Then move down to your arms, and make sure you are getting deep into the very marrow when you tense up, and then slowly release that tension and feel your arms lighten. Clench your hands tightly for a few moments, and release letting them rest quietly at your sides.
Move up to your neck, and remembering to breathe, tense up every muscle and tendon and hold it, then release it again feeling it relax. Now we get to your face, and tense it up as tightly as possible, and then release it smiling slightly and naturally as you feel the stress and tension move away from your body. Now we finally come to the scalp, feel the tension melt away and a lightness set in. Release your worries. Relax and focus again on your breathing, notice the rhythm as you breathe in and breathe out. Soon, you will be asleep.

This is the first exercises that I taught myself, and it helps most nights. At first, I had to tape my own voice reading aloud what the exercises was just to train myself. Eventually I didn't need the tape anymore, and it became a practice. Some nights I need to go further, and I can post those exercises as well if you or anyone else is interested. Curing my insomnia with self-hypnosis was the best thing I ever did for my health and well being. It makes a tremendous difference.
I hope that this helps. I know how suffering with the insomnia is. My 9 year old also has insomnia, and I have walked him through these steps myself and it's really worked for him as well.
Let me know if you'd like to learn about the rest of it. It can be tremendously helpful in any times of stress.
