Does anyone know or recommend any cds to help me sleep? Is hypnosis a Christian thing to do? Because I noticed that there are a lot of cd's on the internet using hypnosis for insomnia. I am desperate. I have had insomnia for many years, and when I do go to sleep I have nightmares. I have tried everything except the cd's. I have got to get some help. I will not take sleeping pills. No new age cd's either.

I do not know why hypnosis wouldn't be a Christian thing to do. I can't think of any verses that would prohibit it. It's mostly meditation that relaxes the nerves and the mind, and it can be very beneficial. I taught myself to self-hypnotize through a book, but I don't know of any tapes or CD's that work well. For some people, CD's that are just rain or rainstorms help. I've been a chronic insomniac since age 4, so I can sympathize with you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what I do:

Lie in bed on your back, making sure that you are comfortable, but that none of your arms or legs are crossed in either way. I do this without a pillow, as I find that the pillow doesn't align my neck properly.

Inhale deeply counting up to 10 in your mind, and then exhale counting down from 10 to 1. Let a natural rhythm take over and continue to do this for a few minutes until you feel your body relax a bit. Make sure to think about nothing else except your breathing, and this becomes easier.

Once you are focused on your breathing and nothing else, try to tense up every muscle in your body slowly counting to ten, and then counting down from ten slowly let it relax. Let every muscle and every nerve relax and open.

Then, beginning at your toes, tense up your toes and feet and hold this for a few seconds, then release them. Keep your focus. Don't let your mind wander. Don't think about anything but what you are doing right this moment. Next tense up your calves and knees holding it for a few seconds, and then relax. Move up your legs to your thighs, and tense it up, thinking about getting deep to every nerve, muscle and tendon all the way to the bone, and then releasing it.

Reaching your lower abdomen, tense up the muscles and hold for a few seconds before releasing them. Then work your stomach and ribcage, tightening them and holding it, then releasing as you breathe out.

Tense up your shoulders, and hold. Release and let the tension in them just slip away into your mattress. Then move down to your arms, and make sure you are getting deep into the very marrow when you tense up, and then slowly release that tension and feel your arms lighten. Clench your hands tightly for a few moments, and release letting them rest quietly at your sides.

Move up to your neck, and remembering to breathe, tense up every muscle and tendon and hold it, then release it again feeling it relax. Now we get to your face, and tense it up as tightly as possible, and then release it smiling slightly and naturally as you feel the stress and tension move away from your body. Now we finally come to the scalp, feel the tension melt away and a lightness set in. Release your worries. Relax and focus again on your breathing, notice the rhythm as you breathe in and breathe out. Soon, you will be asleep.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first exercises that I taught myself, and it helps most nights. At first, I had to tape my own voice reading aloud what the exercises was just to train myself. Eventually I didn't need the tape anymore, and it became a practice. Some nights I need to go further, and I can post those exercises as well if you or anyone else is interested. Curing my insomnia with self-hypnosis was the best thing I ever did for my health and well being. It makes a tremendous difference.

I hope that this helps. I know how suffering with the insomnia is. My 9 year old also has insomnia, and I have walked him through these steps myself and it's really worked for him as well.

Let me know if you'd like to learn about the rest of it. It can be tremendously helpful in any times of stress.

Brookstone (the massage chair place) has CD's they say are "Scientifically engineered"
to make you sleep. They also have CD's designed for just plain relaxation as well. The price is pretty hefty though. I don't know what you consider "New Age", but you might want to try Enya, any of her stuff is great for relaxation. I also take a natural supplement called Min-Tran by standard process that is a natural relaxer and makes me feel sleepy.

Actually, hypnosis is allowing your consciousness to yield to the will of another, and, as such, is not a very Christian thing to do. (your will is no longer free).

As someone who sometimes has insomnia...May I suggest trying caffeine near bedtime? People are not often aware that caffeine acts as a depressant in those under twelve, usually because there is so much sugar in anything kids have that has caffeine. On some people (I am one of them, though I haven't seen twelve in many years) it continues to act as a depressant. When I can't sleep, I make a cup of tea, and the cafeine in it makes me sleepy.

Hypnosis without chemicals does no such thing. The parlor tricks you see on TV are just that, parlor tricks. There is no evidence whatsoever that self-hypnosis will allow others to suggest something you would not do otherwise. In fact, when put to the test, people will come out of their meditative state when something is suggested to them that goes against their own values and morals, including small things. A vegetarian would not eat meat for example. What you see on TV has no basis whatsoever in scientific fact.

We aren't talking about chemically altering the brain, I was simply giving exercises to relax.

Self-hypnosis is not yielding your will to another, but hypno-therapy IS. As to TV...I don't watch it, so I couldn't tell you how it is portrayed. I can only tell you that many churches do not approve in the least about hypnosis, when one person hypnotizes anotehr. Self-hypnosis it different.

Off of the hypnosis point.

Here is a list of herbs that might help.
Kava- Relaxes the skeletal muscles;sedates the central nervous system.
([Kavapyrone tablets.Take 60-120 mg daily]You should be able to find tablets at a health food store. Also Under the name of Kava-kava)

Passionflower- Indces muscle relaxation and sleepiness without causing next-morning drowsiness.(Tea bag.Take 1 cup 2-3 hours before bed)

Valerian- Reduces time required to fall asleep without next-morning "hangover"
(Valepotriate tablets.50-100 mg on an empty stomach 1 hour before bedtime)

Hope this helps.

i take Melatonin every night, since a doctor recommended it to me several years ago when I was going thru a big insomnia/depression time. Its safe and it ensures I'll get a good night sleep (i still have problems sleeping every once in awhile).

There is documented evidence that kava causes liver damage. It has been completely banned in several European countries. The US FDA has issued a warning about liver damage as well. I'd avoid this one.

I've heard great things about chamomile, melatonin, and Valerian root for insomnia. While these aren't habit-forming, it's always a good idea not to become mentally dependent on anything that helps you sleep. Only take them every now and then if necessary.

What I've found really helps with my insomnia is just getting on a really good sleep schedule: getting up and going to bed at the same time every day. Also, eating very well + exercise knocks me out cold. :D

Hey... if you're still even checking here, I wanted to give you the advice that helped me....

No caffeine after noon (including chocolate), take a hot shower before bed (no need to lather up, it's just to relax your muscles), drink hot cammomile tea before bed, read a book by lamplight in bed instead of watching TV.

It's the silliest things that help the most. SInce I started doing this, I've had no problems.

also if you are using melatonin, I would recomend rotating it with several of the herbs above. If you just use melatonin without a break your body will stop producing its own melatonin and you might have more trouble sleeping.

We represent Mitamins, an on-line company supplying customized vitamin supplements to the USA and we hope this information may be of interest to you.
Insomnia refers to a prolonged inability to get adequate sleep. This could be due to waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble getting back to sleep or having trouble falling asleep in the first place. Insomnia can be a temporary, occasional, or chronic problem.
The following nutritional components may be beneficial. Valerian acts like a sedative on the brain and nervous system, it is best taken 30 minutes before bedtime. Skullcap has been used historically as a sedative for people with nervous tension and insomnia. The chemicals in Hops may act as a sedative and help to cause sleep and lessen anxiety and tenseness. St John’s Wort Extract helps to promote a positive mood and good emotional balance. Calcium, Inositol and Vitamin B Complex 50 are all essential nutrients required for nervous system health. Magnesium is needed to balance with calcium and helps relax muscles.
Dr. Balch works with Mitamins to provide custom-made natural remedies for those who want an all-in-one daily supplement that addresses all their health concerns, as well as providing the vitamins and minerals needed for optimum health and wellness. We include formula for 680 different health concerns in our database.
If you are concerned or unsure about your symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider for professional medical advice.
