  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have the unfortunate tendency to write like whatever I'm reading at the time. Long-term influences have been Oscar Wilde (my favourite author) and Tim O'Brien (even though I only read one of his books).
The strange thing is, they're almost polar opposites. Wilde, who was a Gothic/Romantic writer, used very flowery diction, and Tim O'Brien, a modern-day writer, is nicely simple and casual. But I've wanted to become more proficient with mixing wit, intellect, and simplicity to create a somewhat casual atmosphere.
Someday.

My influences are the pulp writers of the 20's and 30's. There intent was simple. Keep the action moving and don't get bogged down in details. only those details needed to explain events in the story, or added focus to the characters were added. These authors were writing mterial that had to either fit in the short story format or, could be broken down by chapters so that the story could fit over several issues of the magazine.

Among those, these are the writers that I still read, and consider influences:

Robert E. Howard
Howard Phillip Lovecraft
Clark Ashton Smith
Lester Dent
Edgar Rice Burroughs

I used to be influenced by whatever I was reading at the time, but by now, my style is pretty much my own. I don't copy anybody's style any longer, neither deliberately nor subconsciously.

As for influences in the broader sense, as in "authors who inspire me" or "authors whose style is just splendid": Zadie Smith (although my own style isn't comical, and my humour tends to be dry and black), Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan, Michel Faber, Virginia Woolf, Homer, Sergej Lukianenko, Alan Moore, Joss Whedon, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Goethe, Hermann Hesse, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, John R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Galsan Tschinag and and and...

I would say that Marc Brown (Arthur series), Patricia Reilly Giff (Polk Street School series), Ann M. Martin (Baby-Sitters Club series), have influenced me so far. Now it's about to be Nicholas Sparks added to this list.
There were some African-American writers too. I think I should add Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston to this list.
