Hi,

If humans one day discover treatments using science to stop the aging process which grants eternal youth, or some other forms of achieving IMMORTALITY ---> what would the theological/religious implications of this be ?

And by "immortality" I mean: VOLUNTARY immortality... that is, immortal/eternal YOUTH (can stay at any age you choose) and can voluntarily choose to die whenever you want

Maybe they do achieve it, or the venom of the locusts of Rev 9 are it! Love to ponder these things, but it doesn't turn out well for them:

And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. Revelation 9:6

Wouldn't that be horrific to achieve immortality and then things get so bad you wished you could die? Some things are worse than death, I suppose.

Even if such an advancement were made, it wouldn't actually be immortality; it'd be a pseudo-immortality.

If you can still get hit by a truck and die, then you're not immortal. And even if we could "cure" dying from such things--advanced reconstruction surgeries, using advanced nanites to perhaps repair all the body's tissues and injuries or something. There's still this:

We live in a universe in which entropy happens. As long as entropy happens, there is no such thing as immortality.

So....what is eternal life if there is no such thing as immortality?

I didn't say there is no such thing as immortality.

True immortality is the resurrection of the body and the life of the Age to Come, when God renews, heals, and restores all of creation.

The universe has entropy now. In the Age to Come that will no longer be the case.

When I say "immortality" I mean VOLUNTARY immortality... that is: you can live for as long as u want, and can choose to die at any point in time (voluntarily) when u want to

Wouldn't be a problem - likely you wouldn't remember how old you were or how good it was...

That would lead to a conflict:

Genesis 6:3 So the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years."

And what if man eventually can mix the chemicals to the point of "Creating life" of any flavor man wants?

And what if man who then was to live forever and can create life - what if man attained over time to the wisdom of God?

What would all of that have as religious implications?
======================================== THE OTHER option

On the OTHER HAND - let's also look at the OTHER alternative.

1. in Matt 4 Satan (who is the fallen Lucifer, who at one time was one of the most intelligent advanced created beings in the entire universe) - challenges Christ to "prove" that He is in fact "God the Son" by doing the work only God can do - turn stone into bread, where bread is a product of components from a living system.

So then what if Satan's assumption was right - only infinite God could do that - not even Lucifer had that power.

2. What if the Genesis scale is correct where mankind degenerates over time rather than approaches closer to infinite years of life - man's biology degenerates over time. And eventually even reproduction itself becomes so flawed it threatens the existence of the species.

3. What if medicine is engaged in a self-limiting gambit where in the end "entropy wins" against all life on Earth. Medicine is finding ways to band aide, patch up , and/or boost a system that is failing but can never get back to even the pre-flood level since the world has lost access to the critical proteins and enzymes within the fruit of the tree of life since it was taken from world. Coming up with short term gains accompanied by long-term unforeseen side-effects where the summation is "loss", a zombie-oid end product with lots of irreversible fatal pathways being engaged.

(Sort of like the planet's biosphere suffering "health destroying effects" put in place to date). -- see all the videos of garbage, plastics etc - dumped into the streams and oceans.

4. What if that loss of access to the tree of life was so critical to eternal life that even Satan and his angels are doomed in that they also lost access to it, and given enough time they themselves would decay and cease to exist.

It means we are stuck in an experiment/system that is winding down - entropy will win ultimately it will in fact win.

The Gospel stops it from simply grinding down to a horrible slow painful-to-watch fizzle, by cutting all that short.

1 Jn 5:11

Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son. 11 And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.…

If one considers that before Noah and the Ark some people were living almost a millennium or over 900 years that compared to how long we live today would see more like immortality. You then consider how that affected the population and it lead to tremendous evil as an evil powerful person could end up with a whole nation of kin and teach and instruct them with his idea of evil and 100-200 even generations could be corrupted by his evil.
In other words the longer we are allowed to live the more likely our world will fall into chaos and evil. I think if a lot of todays evil dictators lived another 100 years and their people (elders) were allowed to stay in power then we would certainly have another world war or.. many of them in the future and with nuclear weapons and people feeling like they are immortal we would have fallout across the planet. People may not die of old age but they will likely be killed by those who want everything for themselves.

No resurrection to everlasting life?
Of course! But it’s His life, not ours. Our eternal life will be derived from His, not independent of it.

Immortality is defined as unending existence. Only God possess that.

There will not be a technological immortality of mortal humans before Christ returns our faith suggests to us, and we can trust that to be ultimately true of course. It's not simply that someone might die accidentally at age 183, but instead that even if hyped and believed and advertised and so on, I won't be really believing people will live to 160 or 180 years old, if I think Genesis chapter 6 had a true statement that God limited us to about 120 years in this mortal temporary body. But we know there will be a real immortality, one of the infinite gifts of Grace.

Indeed, Christ tells us that all mortal death of these "dust" bodies is only sleep! From which we will all awaken.
