The image server is down again, and the host is working on it. They say it is a "kernel panic".

I've told our current host that all these downtime is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

As a result, we will be moving to a new datacentre with a new company in the next week or so.

Sorry that all of you have to endure this - I will be CHANGING HOSTING COMPANIES so that all this no longer happens.

Hehe - looks like it's back to the joys and excitement of PDA. :D

Erwin, in all your stressing over this site, please remember to take a deep breath and relax every now and then. They tell me it does a world of good.

It was actually the hosting techs who brought it up.

In fact, the problem was, and I quote:

Okay, after testing many different things, we have narrowed it down to perhaps a bad board, cpu, or memory.

They changed the image server from a Dual Xeon to a Dual Opteron and want to add hardware RAID mirroring to it, which is a good idea.

Apparently lighttpd, the web server software we are currently use, is buggy, and in php-cgi form leaks memory - refer here from an article just 4 days ago:
http://trac.lighttpd.net/trac/ticket/758

Looks like all our webservers (6 of them) will change over from lighttpd to httpd (Apache) at some stage to see if that solves our instability issues.

I'm also going to pay extra for a team of professionals to look after the servers for me too - will cost more, but at least a pro will be doing it instead of an amateur like me!

I'm very very very sorry for the problems - thank you for being patient while we work through this.

A little proactive network management goes a long way:

Erwin, you've done an excellent job! I'm not so sure that a team of professionals could do any better considering the size of this forum. At the same time, I'm sure you're getting tired of trying to figure out the little glitches and all...so I don't blame you for wanting to hire out. You need to be able to relax and spend time with your family as well. And I know that stuff like this can end up sucking all your free time up and burn you out fast. Just want to tell you though that you've done a great job and I appreciate you. :)
