• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi Needing Grace - Dont let anyone push you away from God....I do wish over pious folks would realize the impact they have on people. We need to lift each other up, not tear each other down! We can teach the truth, but in loving, compassionate ways....people who forget charity are sinning usually as much or more than the sinners they are condemning...

Well looks like despite the mod sending me a PM telling me that I was suspended for 3 days, it got extended to Jan 15, without him telling me why.

I'm probably done with that website. There is nothing spiritually edifying there and I'm not sure I understand why I bothered with it after having my last suspension lifted.

Jesus is God. He had perfect knowledge. Normal kids are know-it-alls. I know I was.

I remember reading about a saint who died at age 14 or 15 and he often scolded fellow classmates and other kids his own age for their sinfulness, and was passionate about doing penance. He was not Jesus either and I guess the Church didn't think he was too cocky, they named him a saint.

So maybe some teens are crazy, over zealous, or whatever but better to be too careful than to die not being careful or zealous enough. Anything can get you to hell. Even Pope Innocent III could have landed in Hell if not for our Blessed Mother. And he was praised as being a holy man.

Aim always for Heaven....if you fall short, purgatory.
If you aim for purgatory and fall short....;)

That makes absolutely no sense. Seems like extraordinary punishment to me.

I hope you won't leave altogether, Jim. Your contributions in other areas of CAF have been most helpful to many. Besides, you enjoy sharing with others - I think you'd miss it.

You can be right in your position, and be wrong in your presentation. What you need to ask yourself in these situations is "is what I'm saying bringing people closer to Christ or pushing them farther away?"

Yeah, charity is a one-way street there. They can take all these pro-papacy quotes terribly out of context (example: a Father makes a claim about Peter, they then apply it to the Popes and claim the Church always felt that way, anachronism, then you refute the quotes showing they're awfully out of context or flat our wrong, then they get huffy.

I found that soundbytes, memorized stuff from apologists, and sweeping conclusions devoid of history were the norm there along with Republican politics and an obsession with issues. Those issues like abortion, homosexuality, in vitro, and the rest became like idols. They talked about nothing but those issues 24/7 and failed to care about so many other issues. And I felt that, as a Christian, my job isn't to speak 24/7 about issues, but to also talk about prayer, fasting, devotion to the saints, and especially the liturgy. And issues like caring for the poor and down-trodden, the elderly, prisoners, and so many other things were swept under the rug. It really felt like phariseeforums.com most of the time

If you really want a good one, try something even worse than being banned----try having the forum masters email you telling you that you're not being banned, because that would create an outcry from all your many, many friends and sympathetic readers so you're being "shut out" of your account and the official status on CAF says "forum regular member" so it looks like you LEFT out of your own free will.

That blows any banning away....
I had to leave CAF because it was depressing me and not helping me in my journey towards the Catholic faith at all. I just found, not 100 percent, but often, "charity" was forgotten on that board. Now, saying that, I want to be charitable to the members, and I do hope those who present in a very judgmental way can learn the errors of their ways just as I hope I learn the error of my ways in whatever way I need to!

I met a lot of very nice Catholics there a few years ago. Some called me their "Favorite Protestant." Expectations we have of forums vary widely, as do their memberships. :)

I too met some nice people at CAF.

As far as Eastern Orthodox Catholics go, I can understand their seeing a lack of charity toward them, but then, Roman Catholics would probably be treated the same at an Orthodox Web Forum.

I know, in my personal contact with Orthodox Christians, I was made to feel 2nd class because I'm Roman Catholic, especially with their animosity toward the Papacy.

It doesn't matter, for I take was in good in Orthodox Church, and leave the bigots behind.

I hope Orthodox Christians would do the same concerning Roman Catholics.

Have to say my experience with Orthodox folk is very different - I have always found them most supportive , when I've needed support, and very friendly .

I have friends who are Orthodox - and they treat me as one of themselves . I've stayed in Orthodox Monasteries and had no problem. I'm good friends with an Orthodox Priest .

There are always exceptions to every rule - and I'm sorry if you have not had the good experiences I have had

can we not do this here?
copy pasting the same old arguements doesnt do anything and you arent being heroic or h;elpful

anyway you ask gurney what he thought
he told you
now you want to jump on him for it
thats not charitable
(and dont say its not charitable to let him be orthodox)
hes not stupid and hes researched his heart out so he knows all the copypastas your throwing at him

anyway this was azbout CAF
not gurneys faith choices
Who are you referring to?
It is part of the faith - so i can post it - whether anyone wants to read it is on them.
*As usual is left wondering what happened*
No clue.

Face to face i met some Orthodox who want reunification.
They wonder why there ever was a split... and with child like faith - dont think it should exist.

The only trouble i have ever seen was in forums.
My biggest pet peeve is when ppl attack the Pope.
Like i said, have yet to see a substantial argument proving he doesnt have headship of the entire Church and that this wasnt already an established fact.

I have seen tons of quotes stating he is. And always running into more as i travel back in time by reading.

I request you go to Apostolic Succession Churches section and clarify what the quotes mean.
Thanks.
Let me know.

Just to be clear, I have also met very friendly and open Orthodox Christians.

I enjoy reading Orthodox spirituality, and have gained much spiritual richness in doing so.

The point I was trying to make earlier, is just as in CAF there are those Catholics who are intolerant toward any one who is not Roman Catholic, there are those in the Orthodox Churches who are intolerant of Roman Catholicism.

Heck, the head Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, opposed Pope John Paul II's request to visit Russia.

So. both Church's have their bigots. We as Christians need to look past them.

I was thinking about this as I heard the gospel at morning mass today. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter. He did not say, thou art Simon and on this Simon I will build my church. The name was changed and chosen because of the new identity Jesus called him to ... ROCK. :)

A few years ago, they banned nearly every active eastern orthodox poster because they were so good at defending orthodoxy that Catholics were converting.

The only time I got into trouble on CAF was when I questioned why they banned some of my friends defending Eastern Orthodoxy; and asked them to please remove the ban. Needless to say, it didn't go over well. Stern warnings were issued. I was so upset by the situation. I do realize CAF is a Catholic Forum, and they are allowed to make the rules. That is true of all forums.

I still post some on CAF. There are a few good friends remaining. Though, most of my best friends from CAF have been banned, which is very discouraging. I learned so much on CAF from my friends who were eventually banned. Quite ironic actually.

CAF is somewhat intolerant. Some Orthodox, particularly converts from evangelical protestantism, can be hyper anti-Catholic. Their efforts at defending Orthodoxy are more of an attempt to besmirch Catholicism than anything else. In such cases CAF is not intolerant to ban them.

Indeed.
And scriptures [NT] goes on to say anyone not build upon the rock, are built upon sand.

I can see that.

Sometimes if any member is hyper anti-Catholic - it doesnt serve a purpose to allow it.
If anything it allows other perceptions besides Catholicism to lay ground work.

I suppose we are all generalizing a bit. I agree that attempts to "besmirch" Catholicism is a reason to ban.
