• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, it is not criminal, but it is a civil violation. Note her t-shirt in the video.

She is a good spokesman for the Dream Act.

8 USC 1325 is a criminal statute.

But, I can't think of any context where someone would call you an "illegal driver."

Any time I drive without my license that's exactly what I am. We don't call speeders illegal driver but that's what they are.

Basically when something is against the law its illegal. So when a person is here in this country against the law, they are here illegally. It's not inflammatory. Its a statement of fact.

You seem to be missing the point. "Illegally" as an adverb to describe an action is different than "illegal" as an adjective to describe the person engaging in the activity. We don't describe unlicensed drivers as "illegal drivers" because it is the conduct, not the person that is illegal. So why the term "illegal alien" for an immigrant without proper documentation?

I'm not missing the point.

If you are living in this country but have not followed the lawful stress to become a citizen then you are here illegally. An "alien" can be here legally or illegally. Therefore an alien here illegally would be an illegal alien.

Just like an illegal left turn is a turn that is illegal.

So making it so hard for yourselves. No one is trying to say anything bad about these people, other than that they are here illegally. Against the law.

While this may be a state-by-state thing, I'm pretty sure that in most cases, that's not correct. You're still a legal driver; you're just unable to produce documentation to verify it (which may be its own law).

For example, PA (the first state whose law I could find) requires that you produce a license within 15 days of it being demanded:

http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/vehicle_code/chapter15.pdf

Actually no. You have broken the law. And in California you have broken the law if you lack evidence of current insurance or the registration for the car.

That those charges will be dismissed if you produce such evidence later does not make the original failure legal.

EDIT:

Just as it is in PA. The original act of driving without the license in you position is still illegal, the subsequent section just allows for avoiding penalties.

§ 1511. Carrying and exhibiting driver's license on demand.
(a) General rule.--
Every licensee shall possess a driver's license issued to the licensee at all times when driving a motor vehicle and shall exhibit the license upon demand by a police officer, and when requested by the police officer the licensee shall write the licensee's name in the presence of the officer in order to provide identity.

(b) Production to avoid penalty.--No person shall be convicted of violating this section or section 1501(a) (relating to drivers required to be licensed) if the person:
(1) produces at the headquarters of the police officer who demanded to see the person's license, within 15 days of the demand, a driver's license valid in this Commonwealth at the time of the demand; or
(2) if a citation has been filed, produces at the office of the issuing authority, within 15 days of the filing of the citation, a driver's license valid in this Commonwealth on the date of the citation.

It carries a penalty of a fine or imprisonment or both, so it sounds criminal to me

She is a good spokesman for the Dream Act.
She's a perfect example of the kind of illegal alien we don't want here. She should be deported to Peru ASAP

Illegal alien describes what kind of alien one is, illegal

But there is a difference between driving without being licensed, and driving without your license on your person.

But not having your license on you doesn't make you an illegal driver, it just means you are driving illegally. And yes, there is a difference between the two; a driver who runs a red light is still a legal driver, but was driving illegally.

If you're driving illegally, you're an illegal driver. If you're in this country illegally, you're an illegal alien. In the case at hand, the illegal alien is dangerous and should be deported to Peru ASAP

They are here illegally. You may want to call it undocumented.

Fact is, when I get pulled over and I don't have my drivers license, I'm driving illegally, not undocumented.

Wrong.

If your child was in the backseat, are they also a criminal? They were in a car being driven illegally.
