Any Vera Brittain - Testament of Youth is AMAZING but not cheerful.
I was going to suggest Bridget Jones but humm you might not like a lot of the content It's full of scarily good insights into the female mind though lol.

OK I think it's now obvious that I'm just randomly typing out books by English ppl here My friend read an interesting book about the character of the English, I will get the name of it.

Ooooh also: Bill Bryson, Notes from a Small Island. And if you read something like a Penguin history of the UK you'll probs know more than me about here

Obv this is just if you're interested, not that you actually need to know any of this to live here!!
