What are some typical things You do in such a situation ?

Do you try to vary what you do in such a situation ?

I try hard to make it a point of being with a Group of People if I know this is going to be the case on any given Saturday Night coming up . I see what the Christian Singles Ministry is doing as far as activities / dining out goes ... or I go to Karoake Night at one of two places locally where I see people I know .

I used to get quite bummed out if I didn't have a Date for Saturday night, but, im pleased to say this has been overcome.

How about you ?

Let's see. Not much dating opportunities going on in the life of a middle-aged single mother who is attending school fulltime.

I study on Saturday nights. We tend to be responsible for around 5 chapters in our text book a week. Every other week things get exciting and I study at the baseball cages while my daughter has softball practice. It got cancelled because of snow tonight though.

Tonight I will be wrapping myself up with the body's immune system, blood transfusion, and HIV...and if I complete that, I might start on kidney transplants. Next weekend, it will be cancers.

Keeping occupied is a good thing .

Do you know about 'Parents Without Partners' national Organization ? They have a website. I know they do a lot of family activities which gives Parents a chance to meet .

I think I would really like studying what you are studying right now. Im so enthralled as to Gods magnificence thru the design and engineering of the Human Anatomy. I recently attended a Group Study on learning about DNA -- the section on Molecular Motors within a Cell simply blew me away in amazement.

The information is interesting but the pace we learn it is brutal. There honestly is no time for anything but school right now. We cover 3 inch textbooks in 8 weeks...cover to cover....and yes, we have to know it all because we have to take a national exam at the end of two years. This is on top of spending 2 eight hour days working in the hospital along with a research paper due and 1 or 2 careplans (which tend to be 21-25 page papers on our assessment and care of assigned real live patients) both due every eight week rotation. My idea of a "party" is to get with another student and study together. We do have a good time but I suspect we would gross out anyone who happened to accidentally over hear some of our conversations.

I actually find the meeting of people at their most vulnerable to be one of most interesting aspects of this profession. This is about meeting people's most basic psychological needs as much as it is about taking care of their bodies and health. I had a patient who was on the downhill slide of having multiple sclerosis...he had just lost his ability to swallow and had come in to have a stomach tube inserted. To give him anything my mouth was a huge risk of causing him to basically "drown" because he couldn't protect his lungs when he did attempt to swallow. He wanted to taste something in his mouth...and was craving a popsicle. I was able to find these small sponges we have on stick that we use to clean the mouths of people who can't handle toothbrushes...and soak up some juice to wipe on his tongue as long as he promised to use his suction wand to remove the excess juice. These are the things they can't teach us in school.

Yes, compassion is a vital element in caring for the infirmed . I come from a Family of Medical Professionals -- my Mom was an LPN and my Dad was an RN and Supervisor of an Infectious Disease Ward at a large local Hospital...and I often saw the compassionate side of them come out when talking about their Patients . My Dad tried hard to get me interested in becoming a Hospital Lab. Technician...but I didn't have the patience to wear a white lab coat and sit still for most of the day at work ; I opted for a career in a Mechanical Trade instead which took me into many homes ; this one home had a 32 year old Woman with a progressive stage of Lou Gehrigs Disease (ALS) . We became pretty much instant friends during a time when she could still communicate thru a special speech machine , and we would enjoy semi weekly chats . We continued our visits almost up to the end where she ultimately suffocated in her own fluids one night. I mention this to say, that, there are plenty of opportunities to serve God and Others who are far less fortunate that we are and God will provide many various avenues for this to take place if we are willing.

The good thing about your present situation, is that it is temporary and that there is light at the end of the educational-tunnel at which time you will have tons more time to pursue social and recreational activities .

Going to Walmart. One of my friends and I have a running gag about Saturday night Walmart trips.

Actually, Saturday nights are a good time to do grocery shopping at Walmart cause the traffic is much less . If Im not doing something on a Saturday night, I often use it to do something productive like grocery shopping, cleaning up the inside of the house, laundry, and making a list of things I want to achieve the upcoming week. But theres nothing like starting a fire and warming the toes on a chilly Saturday night with book in hand.

I often go to the singles dances, sometimes a date, sometimes a personal growth workshop other times I go out with a meetup group. Quite often I get to share a little about my faith in Christ with someone.

Nice ! Its good having options.

This past weekend it was a road trip to visit a GF. Nice Friday night to catch up. Sat. a walk on the beach and then an AA party Sat. night as one of the local members was celebrating his 60th birthday and about 20 yrs sober. Sunday off to visit a new local church and then back home. Great weekend.

Sounds like a great weekend! Sometimes I wish I had more of a social life, but then I think, "nah, I like my alone time too much". How was your visit to the new church?

That's the nice things about GFs, I can leave and go home after an enjoyable time with them.

The church is a new church, or maybe a restart of one that had almost no one attending. I really liked the songs they sang, tho the musicians and singers sounded a little insecure to me. The people were friendly. The sermon was really nice, tho I thought he as a little wordy. That is probably the complaint I have with most preachers. I'm like say your point and get on to the next one. But when one has heard as many sermons and teachings as I have, almost everything is a repeat in some form.

Check out meetup.com ... there are a lot of lonely people out there. So I get out to befriend them. One of the best things I've done for my relationship with God. Jesus said if we have done it unto the least of them we have done it unto Him. Want to be a friend of God's then be a friend to one of His children.

Saturday nights...I don't go out very much, if at all except maybe going to the store for a few things. For the most part I do alot of reading, play some PS3 and watch movies. Weekends is usually the time I do my laundry and other normal chores. Other than that, things stay quiet for me.
