There is always the possibility that Jesus meant what he said
" Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, "
The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or, 'There it is!' For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst."…
If you read it again, you'll see he said ( Jesus ) "
not coming with signs to be observed "
Of course, this would mean that all the religious people that have pushed the ideas that the sky will split open and fire and lightning and blah blah.....are dead wrong about literal interpretations, and these things will be explained by Jesus when he returns
Then of course, there is the parable of the vineyard workers, again, Jesus' own words, in the parable of the vineyard owner's son, in which he finally sends his son after the husbandmen kill everybody else before him
-----------------------------
Matthew chapter 21
" But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
And they caught him, and cast
him out of the vineyard, and slew
him.
When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out
his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof
And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder "
-------------------------
...and so Jesus is going to fall out of the sky riding a horse, and split mountains....yet people are going to react by saying :
" This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance "
On what planet does that make any sense ?
More likely that many many people are in for a hard surprise
I wonder how happy they'd be to see their king if they had to admit being wrong about a great many things regarding their Biblical interpretations this whole time ?
Methinks the " humility to the king " would go right out the window
