If I listen to metal, am I being a bad christian?

I'm going to give you an example. I don't drink, not because I think it is wrong (although it is wrong to get drunk), but because of its possible negative witness to others. "Did you see that? John's drinking, and he says he's a Christian. What a hypocrite!" The issue of drinking isn't as big a problem as it used to be, but it still can be.

Pick anything in a similar vein to that as an example. Think of something you believe is fine to do as a Christian and then evaluate how secular society views doing this as a Christian. Yes, all things are permissable, but not all things are beneficial. You must not merely focus on yourself, as a Christian, but you need to think of others and your witness to the world! :lighthouse to the world:
I see your point, but people have gone to ridiculous extremes and legalism following this line of thought. Example: Some Christians think it's wrong to see movies inthe theater because someone might assume that you're going to see the latest, godless R-rated movie, but you're actually just going to see "The Incredibles" or something like that. Scripture does not condemn going out and living life, we are just supposed to be careful as we do so.

I respect your choice to not drink. I let people know who I'm with when I have the occasional drink that one is all I'm drinking, and I never drink if I'm driving. Just letting them know that much and that it is against God to get drunk will also have an impression on them. We do need to be good examples, but we also need to talk to others about our beliefs so they know where we're coming from and who we serve. That way, they may not make such unreasonable conclusions at the theater.

Will this cause a non-Christian to say, "Well, if he's a Christian and can listen to that kind of music, why become a Christian? I do that now!"
If you're talking about Manson or Zombie, I agree with you. However, many unbelievers who like rock don't like CCM style music because in their eyes, that whole image is gay. That's why we need Christian metal. People shouldn't and don't want to become Christians because they want to look like Justin Timberlake, they should come to God for the forgiveness of sins.

Some very good points, Sketch. I guess I was really responding to this comment "You can be a Christian and listen to whatever you want." which I believe is a completely improper attitude as a Christian. Paul said, well, since God has given us all this grace, should we not continue to do whatever we want so that grace may abound? NO! he says. This is the point I was trying to make.

And, I really do believe that we, as God's children, should strive to live lives that are pleasing to him and lead others to Christ because of the witness of our lives.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

Regards,

CK

In my opinion, not all secular metal bands are so bad. Helloween for instance, is a secular power metal band from Germany. Although they are not my "cup of tea", their lyrics is on the positive side.
Here is a quote from one of the their songs..

"It's time to go
Time for the freedom
Time to face what we all believe in
Pray strong
Pray to the higher
Turn your back on the devil's fire
Time to go
Time for the freedom
Time to face what we all believe in
Time is passing by"

Sounds positive to me...
But the other bands that denouce God and promote gloom, doom and destruction, I just don't see how any Christian can subject themselves to this lack of grandjur. I believe that everything bad that happens, something good comes out of it. Example, the 9-11 event. Rock stars are no longer heroes. The tragedy made us realize that the true heroes are the Law Enforcement, Firefighters , Medical units, and last, but not least The Armed Forces of America

Key word in that verse is "should." Grace is subject to abuse(and we abuse it daily). We can listen to anything we want and be a Christian, but that doesn't mean we should(all things are lawful, but not everything is beneficial).

And, I really do believe that we, as God's children, should strive to live lives that are pleasing to him and lead others to Christ because of the witness of our lives.

Indeed. :)

For some reason people always associate metal with satan. That is totally wrong. Some of the most vile lyrics can be found in music bieng played on daytime radio.

Most metal bands, and I'm not talking about those who take an active stance against Christ, actually has some meaningful lyrics. I would say that most of them are more concerned with what's happening to the world, than some Greenpeace activists.

Anyway, it was metal that got me to focus on God (Tourniquet), and it will always be metal that I feel the most for.

As have been quoted many times before. ROCK ON!!!

Has anyone noticed that alot of Christian bands have been making it in the main stream music industry?

I think the reason is that they are not super-uber try to shove the religion down people's throats so alot of music fans that stray away from Christian music, buy the CDs, enjoy the music, then after reading the lyrics, realize they baoght a Christian band's CD.

After all, we do not need another Striper band around. Their downfall was being to up-front with the faith and that got them bumped from the main stream media.

I remember Stryper's video Calling on you reached the No.2 spot on MTV's video countdown in 1986.

Being "up front" about their faith did not get them bumped. Like Poison, Winger, Warrent, Great White and other hosts of Hair bands, fell of the mainstream altogether.

Yes, Stryper was a *glam* hair band.

While STryper reached prominece on Secular Charts:

1. They themselves lived very ungodly lifestyles

2. They often are ridiculed these days on the mainstream market. Stryper's song "Honestly" was #7 on VH1's AWESOMELY BAD Metal Songs just because they tsing about Jesus and not worshiping the devil
