If I listen to metal, am I being a bad christian?

honestly, i'd say first of all go with what the word of God says:

In Philippians 4:8 it says, "Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious--the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse."

It doesn't matter what style of music you are listening to, what matters is the message...is it a good message? Is it pure? Praiseworthy? Would it be pleasing to God?
Those are the questions you have to ask yourself and examine your own life to determine if what you're listening to has a bad affect on your walk with God.

I don't think you're a bad Christian as long as you stay sensative with what God is trying to tell you, follow His leading in everything and you won't regret it!

Also, i don't know how many Christian metal bands you listen (if any) to but if you want any info on some let me know and i'll be happy to help.

If I listen to heavy metal (Hammerfall, DIO, etc) am I being a bad christian?

Thanks
As a former Black metal fan, I can say it depends on what band or song you are listening to. Black metal, IMO, is horrific. Most of the bands denouce God and scream about gloom, doom and destruction (not good). Although some metal bands isn't so bad..like Dio. I can tell the difference with my mindset from the days of listening to metal, I'm not so angry now. Stay away from bands like Celtic Frost, Bathory and Cradle of Filth. I really don't listen to secular music anymore, much less metal. The closest metal band I listen to now is Blindside;)

i listen to all types of metal, though i tend to stay away from black metal because that is outright anti-christian. i do my best at balancing my secular intake with my christian intake. i know it doesn't justify the horrid lyrics i may or may not be listening to (when you can even understand the lyrics...) but i don't feel convicted that i can't be listening to those bands. i've prayed about it many times, but i feel no guilt when i listen to most of the bands i listen to... i still make mistakes though and listen to stuff i shouldn't be listening to...

Amen brother, It shows that we are human. I, personally, felt anger within myself back in days of my headbanging years. I gotta admit, I never felt that way with Christian rock.

Music effects you more than you think! You could listen to as much metal as you would like, but I would encourage you to listen to christian metal only. Secular metal (and other music generes) often oppose the word of God, and we as christians should not listen to it! But it doesnt make you a bad christian if you do. Its just for the best of your relationship with Christ. The more you get from His word, and the less you get from the world, the closer you will grow to Him.
God bless!

because black metal is the only genre that is specificaly against christianity. i don't just mean they sing about things that aren't christian, i mean they sing against christians. death metal deals more with... funny enough... death. of course, it's not all about death, but it's more just an angry genre of music... angry about the world, filled with hurt and sometimes senseless gore (which is really quite over the top). black metal however is filled with anger against christians and against God. they say metal is the devil's music... they should be more specific... black metal is the devil's music.

i'm not going to say you're a bad christian for listening to it. it's a personal standard i have set for myself. that's just my view on it.

Kekal is a good Christian unblack metal band. Soul Embraced, Mortification, and Extol all have solid death metal releases out. I listen to the Christian hard stuff myself, and generally stay away from secular. However, I do listen to some secular hard music, just not their anti-Christian songs. I filter out a lot of otherwise good songs :(

Let's forget the fact that it's "anti-Chritian" for a second, but someone said this for me to think about a few years ago.."Either it's of the Lord, or it isn't. There is no middle". Make sense to me......

well God made music, and all genres of music. So the genre itself is Gods, but the lyrics arent.

Study the lyrics of these Christian metal bands, and there is no doubt that they are for the Lord.
