ICE Agents Turned Away By Families Amid Opposition In NYC

The federal government promised ICE raids this weekend, and Saturday morning it kept its promise. But advocates say that ICE agents were turned away by families in Manhattan and Brooklyn during those attempted raids.

“We heard two reports from Sunset Park. Third report was in East Harlem,” city Immigrants Affairs Commissioner Bitta Mostofi said. “Eyewitnesses speaking to us about ICE attempts to gain access and entry and conduct arrests, but thankfully unsuccessfully.”. . .

Democrats leaders like Council Speaker Corey Johnson have been advising people to be careful about opening their door. They’re reminding undocumented immigrants that they’re not obliged to answer if ICE agents don’t have authorization signed by a judge.

To be clear, this is a pool of people who have had their day in court and ordered removed. If they sought asylum, they have been denied by a judge. If they sought legal status, they have been denied.

They have had their day in court, although there's plenty of reason to believe they never showed up for it.

Thoughts?

Hopefully they include Trump family businesses.

But seriously, I'm curious as to how effective any raid can be if it's pre-announced by a certain individual in the White House?

It was until Obama. Note: The "returns" dropped by 2/3 under Obama because they relabeled returns as removals. It seems a bit absurd to even categorize a "return" as a deportation. But that is politics.

"The reality is that the operation is similar to one in 2016 under President Barack Obama and another in 2017 under Trump. The Obama-era operation resulted in about 10% of those targeted being arrested, and the Trump effort had a lower arrest rate", Albence said.

That means the operation, targeting 2,000 people, could yield about 200 arrests based on previous crackdowns. Trump has said on Twitter that his agents plan to arrest millions of immigrants in the country illegally.

...of course Obama did not dictate when the raids would occur or pre-announce them....then again, the current President has a different objective.

Then by giving them a bone like a perceived failure or a lawsuit, they will relentlessly focus all their attention and political effort on that ruse. Trump will even purposely troll, pick scabs, and act concerned to ensure they keep their interest focused, and remain emotionally involved rather than logical.

This is political three card monte. Trump has a lot of people following the wrong cards by giving them an opportunity to obstruct him publicly and garner a 'win'.

Illegal immigrants who were granted voluntary departure — also known as “self-deportation” — increased by 50% in 2017, according to information compiled by The Marshall Project. In fiscal year 2018, the number of aliens who asked an immigration court for permission to leave the country on their own accord doubled from the previous fiscal year. Applications in 2018, in fact, reached a seven-year high.


The rising number of self-deportations far outpaces the 17% growth in overall U.S. immigration cases, indicating that a higher percentage of illegal migrants are opting to leave rather than face government-coerced deportation.

There are incentives for illegals who choose to voluntarily leave. Instead of being held in a detention center for an indefinite amount of time or undergo a strenuous courtroom battle, undocumented immigrants can simply return to their home country. Additionally, migrants who don’t have a deportation on their record are not required to wait years to apply for a U.S. visa to re-enter the country.
