• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi all,
I started smoking last year and I have a few questions about it...

Are lights better than normal cigarettes? What's the difference between them anyway? (Forgive me I'm new to it). Is there any sure cure for it? To quit, I mean..? And are my lungs black now, or does it take many years of smoking to do that?

I want to quit soon but I'm afraid I'll gain more weight. But I hate the smell and my brother doesn't know I do it and he's totally against it and he'd freak out if i told him. Telling my parents was a breeze because they both smoke but see my brother is allergic to smoke, it bothers his allergies and he's always wanting me to come over and play video games with him but i'm afraid that i'll get a craving for a cigarette and I just want to quit but I don't know where to start. I've cut back a lot! One pack lasted me at least 4 days, so that's really good compared to a half a pack a day like I was doing.

Anyway, thanks in advance. I'll be back here soon to check and see if anyone's replied (I don't get on everyday).

Nope. They can actually be worse for you, as people tend to take longer drags on them then a "full-flavor" cigarette.

What's the difference between them anyway? (Forgive me I'm new to it).

Yes! You quit. Seriously. After a while the withdrawal symptoms go away, and your body heals up the best it can, you're cured.

And are my lungs black now, or does it take many years of smoking to do that?

Everyday you smoke they get a little nastier inside, a few more nerve endings die, and your oxygen consumption goes down. Your body is constantly trying to fix it, day and night, and every time you smoke you take a few steps back.

Are they black yet? Probably not, probably just some sores and such, but they don't turn black overnight, it takes time to build up.

The only safe cigarette is one that is never lit.

If your not comfortable smoking then quit. As far as lights they are not any better as they still have a lot of chemicals in them that destroy your body as well as you may even smoke more of them to get the nicotine hit the body craves (they never really worked for me).

As you are new to this I suggest you research what you are doing to your body and get help. I know that in Australia we have what they csall a quit line where you can get information packs to help you quit. I am sure that if you go into any doctors surgery and asked for free information on quitting smoking they will happily give it to you. You may even be able to get the smae information from a pharmacy/chemist/drug store (not sure what you call them in America).

Hope this helpful as well as the sooner you quit the higher the chance of your body fully recovering.
