• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

It's been long enough that I don't remember too well, (probably blacked out); but my detox was at a hospital where you could choose what you wanted for supper, and I remember having two hamburgers night after night after night. Then it was off to a VA Hospital, where you ate what the cafeteria served and that was that.

Welcome to the AlAbuse section, by the way. Hope you stick around. It can be a lot like a meeting around here.

Yes, sugar cravings are normal. It has to do with the fact that alcohol becomes sugar in the bloodstream and the pancreas is affected in an unhealthy way by the alcohol. Many alcoholics become diabetics because of their overconsumption of alcohol.

If you are having trouble detoxing, get medical help. Detoxing off alcohol is dangerous, and often requires medical supervision. If you are having sugar cravings, try to eat healthy, with plenty of proteins, whole grains and lot of water. Use natural sugar, like fruit, for the sugar cravings. Carry cheese sticks and nuts to help you.

After I got sober once, I became hypoglycemic, and eventually prediabetic. Like I said, I messed up my pancreas big time with my drinking.

God bless.

It somewhat is. It's a mental thing and physical thing kinda wrapped around each other. For example, when we lose sleep, we tend to eat more to get the needed energy. When we don't drink, we need a replacement. Any addiction needs a replacement. Think of the amount of alcoholics who suddenly begin smoking, watching porn, or doing some other addictive behavior. In this case, the body needs a fix and the unconscious needs a chemical.

Whenever I have quit, I always turn to junk food :-(...now that's become another addiction to conquer *sigh*

It's not about solving addictions...you need to know why you keep turning to addictions. Whenever someone realizes that they have an addiction, they must also realize that there is a reason they keep reaching out for it. There is an underlying cause to all addictions and usually, until that addiction cause is found the actual addictions can't really be taken care of. Instead, the person just bounces from one thing to the next.

I remember an old song, "Away, Away With the Rum, By Gum" which spoke of not even eating rum cake because...

"Can you imagine a greater disgrace
Than a man in the gutter with crumbs on his face."

M. E. is right as usual, most of us here are addictive personalities; and junk food may not do your waist, hips and thighs a lot of good. But you're not going to be pulled over by the cops 'cause you've had too many cupcakes, or end up in jail, a jitter joint and/or divorce court. Sometimes you have to go with the part of the problem that's in front of you right now.
