  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In many cases a judgmental spirit is the result of incorrect theology. For instance, If we believe that faith is a gift, it is easy to feel that we are no better than others and we are saved simply because of grace alone. If on the other hand we believe that faith is something we produce, it is easy to feel that we had a quality within us that caused us to believe which others who did not get saved were missing.

Many Arminians have indicated by accident during an argument that they felt that they were willing to have faith whereas others were not, because they were especially humble or because they were a little smarter than others. One even prayed in Church one day..." Lord, I am thankful that I was smart enough to see my need for you." Those who believe that they had faith in Jesus because of God's unconditional choice generally believe that "but for the grace of God, there go I."

There are real consequences to bad theology. Pride and being judgmental are two of them.

This is not a question of being judgmental, but of ensuring that introverts understand that their "malady" is not approved by the Lord, and there is no Scripture to support their position. Many of the prophets (including Moses) pleaded incompetence and inability to communicate (or so they imagined). The LORD brushed aside their excuses.

Introverts are not incompetent and do not have an inability to communicate. It is no more a malady than extroversion is. I'm an introvert and I preach from the pulpit and teach and do them very well. What I don't do very well is to walk into a room full of people and start moving from person to person, engaging in conversation. If I pump myself up a bit (including praying for it), I can do it for a while before my energy level begins to drop off.

If you want to put it that way, extroversion is theft because they gather energy from other people. If they are sucking the energy out of an introvert, then they are stealing. There is scripture about that.

(Note: I don't really believe that extroverts are stealing, but it is illustrative of this ridiculous idea that introversion is sin.)

There are just natural differences between people. Peter was an extrovert. Mary may have been more of an introvert. The Bible says that she "Pondered those things in her heart" Peter was always so quick to speak that he sometimes sinned by saying foolish things. It can be just as sinful to speak hastily without thinking than by failing to speak when called upon to do so. Proverbs says "in many words sin is not lacking"....

Having many words and interesting things to say to people (which is more or less what extraverts do) is too a large extent a gift from God anyway right? It doesn't mean that introverts aren't supposed to walk by faith.

Introverts have "many words and interesting things to say" too. They aren't stupid. The only difference between the two is in energy transfer. Extroverts gain energy from being with people and expend it when alone. Introverts gain energy though time alone and expend it in interaction with others.

Question: "Is it wrong for a Christian to be an introvert?"
I think there can be good things about being introverted . . . if it means being thoughtful. But do not limit yourself to yourself :) Jesus makes us new. I think this means that no one keeps one's former personality. But we discover who we become, as we grow in God's love. And because we love people we reach out to them.

There can be times to be more introverted, other times to be outgoing.

Jesus spent all that time in prayer, in the wilderness. One could say He was being a loner and liking to be alone. But, also, He went right into the middle of crowds and related with various people. And Jesus had special lady friends, like Mary the sister of Lazarus and Mary Magdalene and I would say others, also.

So, have the best of being introverted and the best of being outgoing. And evaluate what is good and what isn't, for either one.

Answer: The term introvert can refer to a shy, self-focused person, or simply to a loner who finds strength in solitude.
Jesus says to deny ourselves (Luke 9:23-24). So, it can be a problem to be "self-focused", depending on what this means, of course >

"Test all things; hold fast what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

In Jesus, we can find strength in solitude of prayer, maybe like Jesus in the garden. But our strength is with God, not really by ourselves. Plus, our brothers and sisters can minister for us to be strong; so we need to share with our Jesus family people!

In general, introverts avoid crowds,
But Jesus has us loving any and all people. You can be quiet and prayerful and meditative in a crowd, anyway :)

dislike small talk,
This can be good > "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:2) But small talk can bring up things a person needs to talk about, from a Christian perspective.

There is more I could offer on this, but is time for me to sign out at the library. Good to see you :) God bless you, too :) Bill
