  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question: "Is it wrong for a Christian to be an introvert?"

Answer: The term introvert can refer to a shy, self-focused person, or simply to a loner who finds strength in solitude. No, it is not wrong for a Christian to be an introvert. However, there are some tendencies that an introvert should watch out for.

In general, introverts avoid crowds, dislike small talk, enjoy long periods of solitude, and prefer deep conversations to party chatter. They are often introspective and realistic about their own flaws. They gravitate toward one or two solid friendships rather than surround themselves with acquaintances. They tend to enjoy creative aspects of self-expression such as art, writing, or music. Many of the world’s greatest artists, authors, and musicians were introverts.

Whereas extroverts are energized by being around others, introverts are energized by long periods of solitude and reflection. As long as the quietness does not become depression or alienation, it can be spiritually beneficial. Prayer, meditation, and waiting upon God often require long periods of stillness to be effective. Introverts are often better at biblical meditation than extroverts because it complements their natural tendencies. The danger for an introvert is in becoming overly introspective. Introverts may tend to live inside their heads rather than serving others the way Jesus commanded (John 13:34; 1 Peter 4:10).

Introversion is not synonymous with unhealthy self-focus. Both introverts and extroverts can struggle with self-absorption, and it is always wrong. A naturally boisterous, friendly person can be sinfully self-focused by striving to draw attention to himself (Romans 12:3).

God created us with varying strengths, weaknesses, and personality types. He can use anyone who submits to Him, and He is often most glorified through our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9). When introverts have totally submitted their lives to the lordship of Jesus Christ, they can be mighty prayer warriors, mentors, and teachers. Spirit-filled introverts use their God-given nature for the glory of God and relish long, fruitful times of worship, soul-searching, and Bible study. When they allow the Holy Spirit to move them beyond their comfort zones, they can then share with others the rich insights God has given them.

There are a few things that can hinder an introvert’s service to God. When their natural quietness is motivated by insecurity or fear, introverts often withdraw from people. They may refuse to engage with others as instructed in Scripture (1 Peter 4:10). This kind of solitude limits them spiritually. Introspection can also lead to a critical spirit. Too much focus on self can result in judging others or even ourselves (Matthew 7:1–2). Introverts may also use their natural reticence as an excuse to avoid taking on responsibilities at church or actively witnessing for Christ. Jesus made no such distinctions in His instructions to us about serving our world and loving others (Acts 1:8; Matthew 10:18–19). The Great Commission is for introverts, too.

Philippians 2:3 says we are to “consider others as better than ourselves.” Some introverts may see this verse as confirmation that they are to see themselves as inferior. A healthy self-image is one in which we see ourselves exactly as God does: no better and no worse. We are to see ourselves as “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Whether introverted or extroverted, Christians need to remember that their temperaments are gifts from God to be used for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

This is me. So it isn't wrong to be an introvert like so many Christians tell me.

Absolutely not! A lot of Christians tell people that they have be outgoing and proclaiming the gospel to every person they meet. They hand you a bunch of brochures and tell you to go knock on doors. Its easy, right? Go talk to new visitors and become their best friend in 2 minutes. Nothing to it, right?

This is great, but it is literally hell on earth for an introvert. Literally!

I read a book a while back (I'm an ISTJ) called "Evangelism for the Rest of Us" by Mike Bechtle. Great book. It explains how we can each use our own personality type to evangelize instead of the "Christians should be an extrovert" model that is forced upon us.

Agreed it is perfectly okay for Christians to be a introvert I am also one not that i am particularly "shy" of huge crowds more like i don't understand how to react in social gatherings and i have kinda sensitive ears etc so i hate being in a crowd. etc etc. Too be honest this may actually be considered a gift sense it helped me stay away from "pressure" to do drugs etc.

Here's the definition of an introvert: "A term introduced by the psychologist Carl Jung to describe a person whose motives and actions are directed inward. Introverts tend to be preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings and minimize their contact with other people. "

Based on this, and based upon what Scripture exhorts Christians to be, IT IS NOT PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE FOR CHRISTIANS TO BE INTROVERTED. That is basically "the flesh". Walking in the Spirit means to be outgoing, reaching out like Christ and the apostles, who were "fishers of men".

Christians are ideally followers to Christ. Was Jesus of Nazareth an introvert? Absolutely NOT. So if you want to follow the Lord, crucify your introverted outlook and do what He did. It is that simple.

introverts make some of the best public speakers ever ..

but go up to them afterwards and they will avoid you ..they cant handle small talk lol..they like to focus in depth onto a topic and expound it fully
unlike the extrovert who like to flit from one topic to the next 4 times in one sentence to three people .
the introvert will always move to the corner and engage in deep conversation with one other ..while the extrovert will say very little of any depth, but do so to many people ..
the extrovert will tell a person of the lord Jesus .. an introvert will explain in depth how to know him ... short term the extrovert is a great witness ..long term the introvert is a far better witness ..both have a role to play :)

Thank you for your input. :)

This is just my opinion. I know I could be wrong.

But I am going to disagree with you that all Christians have to be outgoing. I also don't believe that everyone is meant to preach the gospel. Paul said that all Christians have different gifts. Some were meant to preach the gospel, some were meant to serve, some were meant to give words of wisdom, etc. Some introvert people can be very kind. I saw, a while ago, one of my neighbors, who is very introverted, give a hand to someone who needed help. After that he did not become this persons best friend. And they did not even exchange conversations after that.

How should the church confront evil? An introvert may choose to pray .
Is there a part for the church in declaring that we must speak out against the wrongs in our society?
When in the church or out.

Those are good questions. :)

I don't really go to church. So I don't know how to answer those questions.

Is it even the churches job to confront evil? Is it the churches job to only preach Christ? I don't know.

There has been a lot of study of introversion since Jung. Introverts are not "flesh" where extroverts are "spirit". They just handle situations differently. Introverts actually make good teachers and preachers, but poor one-to-few evangelists. They are good at one-to-one evangelism, much better than the extrovert, who is always seeking a larger crowd.

Thanks for the reply to my questions Jesse. Going to a church could be hard for an introvert, you may need a friend to go with. It makes it easier for me to attend any fellowship.
Would you pray against an evil and hope that the church would speak against it?
What would your perfect church fellowship look like?
I do pray that the Lord Jesus would put the light of the truth into dark places, to give oppertunity for those hiding there to recieve truth and help.
Our world is very troubled with many voices stilled in fear, while the devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

Jesus chose Apostles who were probably mostly extroverts so that they would be good evangelists. Others He passed by because they were too young or old or introverted or too FEMALE to be an Apostle. So does that mean that they weren't good Christians? Of course not. Not everyone is an extrovert and not everyone was the best candidate to be an Apostle or an evangelist.
The idea that everyone's personality type has to fit the same mold is incorrect. Besides... Carl Yung was an Atheist. Why do we have to listen to him?
It often happens in the Christian life that rich Christians assume that the reason they are rich is because God has blessed them more than others because they are more devout than others. Extremely intelligent people feel that they are smart because they have studied so much harder than others. Healthy people assume that other people are sick because they must have committed some terrible sin. Tall, good looking people assume that they have good jobs because they have worked so much harder than others... when the reality is that often they are even less qualified than ugly people who weren't hired because of their looks.

In the same way... it is often true that if we are extroverted we look down our noses at introverts and just assume that they are that way because they are so unspiritual. If they were just spiritual like us they could be pleasing to God like we are.

It is better not to be so judgmental. Some of the greatest theologians and bible teachers in History who have been used to bring about Great Awakenings have been introverted. Even Jonathan Edwards was that way.

Really? You would have us believe that Christ and His apostles were introverts, or that Christians are not commanded to reach out at every opportunity?

This is not a question of being judgmental, but of ensuring that introverts understand that their "malady" is not approved by the Lord, and there is no Scripture to support their position. Many of the prophets (including Moses) pleaded incompetence and inability to communicate (or so they imagined). The LORD brushed aside their excuses.

I would have you believe that your characterization and judgement of introverts as well as your opinion about Christ and the apostles personalities as confirmation of the reality that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes, I can pray against evil and pray that God empowers the church. I mean, I think that's what you are asking.

I don't know what my perfect church would be like. I don't hate church or have any complaints about them at all. I use to criticize them. But I don't any more. I believe it is wrong unless they preach a false doctrine. For example, I have no respect towards the United Methods Church. They teach homosexuality is OK. They even allow pastors to be gay. I feel sorry for them.

Read Ephesians. Everyone has different gifts. Some of those gifts are well suited for extroverts and some for introverts. Different people "reach out" in different ways.
