*shrug* I know people who do, I mean I'll eat porcupine, and other smaller critters..but squirrel? I did hear it was good..maybe I should try it.

It's kinda like roast beef in a way, if that makes any sense.

I guess if you can watch something die, then you have no problem eating it,hey?

Are you vegetarian? :p (not that there's anything wrong with that)
Well, I don't exactly 'watch it die' generally one aims so the animal dies in one hit and dies instantly..thus little to no pain (depending where you hit it) Then, being the responsible hunter, clean and butcher the animal using as much as possible from it, and cook it.
Saves tons of $$ every year that we would be spending on 25$ pieces of meat that would barely feed a four-year old.

Not only is hunting responsible and enviormental, it is frugal as well. :preach:

I once ate Moose and had no clue what it was, I thought it was beef..then I found out.."Oh. That would explain why I thought the beef tasted funny"

Croc isn't that bad either, though it's sort of bland. I hear moose is prime meat, so I would love to eat some of that at least once.

It was very good! Different..not 'gamey' per say, but it doesn't taste like beef.

Has anyone else noticed that venison takes almost exactly like beef? I can't tell the difference anymore.
Also, does anyone here butcher? or do you just send it out?

It does taste pretty close to beef, the last time I had it we cooked it as a roast and it was really similar, we just used different seasonings that made it taste more different.

We don't butcher the deer ourselves, other animals we have, a few guys my dad works with did most of it for us when my brother got a deer last season.

^_^ Lol Ginsu.

It's not hard at all to get the license, I would just suggest you take the course. It's only a weekend, which is followed by the test.
Deer, I find is fun to hunt, because they're bigger, but can't eat you. (or at least, it's very unlikely.)
I'm thinking of getting an SKS rifle, seeing as I'm only 5'3, small light guns, with litte recoil are very good for me.
Whay type are you planing on getting Ginsu?

~Jen

Yeah theres a few places that offer courses, its just me finding time to do so. Heh.
I was thinking something from the kalashnikov family because of their reliablity, but I want to keep my options open, perhaps an AR-15 or VZ-58.

Theres deer everywhere, it's not uncommon to see a dead one on the side of the road. Theres no natural predators around at all, alot of farmers shot off what wolves and bears where around.

And yes, we have an abundance of mule deer as well.

We have wolves and cyotes, as well as some bear and even a few bobcat and cougers...not to mention the huge fishers that are killing off everything smaller then the deer.

We have predators here, but the deer population has exploded, so we're al given an extra tag in hunting season.

Sounds like our place. we have all you listed except wolves and fishers. Have seen them not far from here. even saw a wolverine once. Mountain lions are running us out of deer. Last year we had six in the front yard all the time. Two cats moved in and no deer. Even got our dog and chased our mules through the fence! What's next? It's against the law here to kill mountain lions.

Even if it eats your dog?! that's crazy.

Here we can legally kill anything that is labled a 'pest' or attacks a domestic animal. (eg, a wolf or couger at our sheep. Even a racoon in our garbage.)
That's awful that you can't hunt the cougers..

Actually we can here only if they are a threat to us or livestock. I'm pretty upset about it and I am not going to wait for it to eat one of my grandkids! I hear one lion kills a deer a week just for food. There are approx 5000 in this state (I think more) that means the eat 260,000 deer a year along with dogs, cats, livestock and even a person or two. In this state their only enemy is sickness and the only sickness is rabies! That's scary!

I am surprised there are so many hunters and girls to, as well not to many anti hunters, but that's another story.
I live in Canada so hunting and fishing is a birth rite almost. I think if you put a piece of beef, deer, moose and elk and tasted them you would find several differences. All wild game is stronger, just as grain and natural beef is. Deer is a little wild in taste, but not like lamb, its finer and very little fat, elk and moose are much the same but a bit sweeter in taste, both are better then deer, It will depend on there feed to, in areas of evergreens they have a different taste,
it's all good just might need a little getting use to it, those who can't tell great some people have the opposite taste.
Now for anti's go to a slaughter house and then call hunting inhumane, chickens breed in a cage they can't even turn in, cattle smelling the death and there nervous scared eye's popping out from the smell and vision of the slaughter. Go tell me it's humane, I think if we think about it god never meant for this cruelty, but fishing and hunting have been around since the history of man.
And 1 shot 1 kill is a hunters creed, it is not a perfect world wounded animals happen but most good hunters will finish the kill as quick as possible.
Well we could talk CWd and other but I don't think anyone should be anti if they eat any fish or meat.
good eating

Yeah, I know about the wilderness areas particularly the Sierra Nevadas. I was trying to get stationed at the Marine Warfighting Center in Bridgeport before I was sent here to Hawaii.
